This handy bi-weekly update of sustainability initiatives and events on campus and in the local region will automatically arrive as an e-mail link for those who sign up for this list serve. We started this communication piece last year as a means to keep the Middlebury community better informed about the numerous environmental projects, presentations and opportunities on or near our campus. Architecture Table
Want to get in the loop on sustainable building design, hear updates on new campus construction projects and renovations – come to the Architecture Table. Students, faculty, staff, alums, and local architects convene for lunch in Ross Commons every Thursday to discuss the built environment. This week (October 23rd), James Timberlake from KieranTimberlake Associates of Philadelphia will be the guest. Architecture Table takes place every Thursday during the academic year in the Ross Seminar Room (LaForce 121) beginning at 12:20.
Tours of Atwater
Faculty, staff and students are invited to tour the Atwater buildings under construction with KieranTimberlake Associates architects. Meet at the gate between Coffrin and Le Chateau either Thursday or Friday (October 23 or 24) at 4:15 p.m.
The Architecture of Atwater Commons
There will be an illustrated lecture by architect James Timberlake, designer of the new Atwater Commons on Thursday, October 23rd at 7:30 p.m. in Johnson 304. Mr. Timberlake, of KieranTimberlake Associates of Philadelphia, is a recipient of the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, and on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. His firm has received over 25 awards for excellence from the American Institute of Architects, is the inaugural recipient of the AIA's Benjamin Latrobe Fellowship, the subject of a recent monograph focusing on design tactics published by the Princeton Architectural Press, and is featured in a solo exhibition entitled SmartWrap at New York's Cooper Hewitt Museum. Vermont Campus Greening Conference
Administrators, faculty, staff, and students from Vermont institutions of higher learning will be gathering at the University of Vermont on Thursday and Friday (October 23-24, 2003) for the first Vermont Campus Greening Conference. Sponsored by UVM, Middlebury College and the US Environmental Protection Agency, this is an opportunity to learn about the best "green" management practices happening on campuses across the state and to create a formal network for sharing resources in the future. Highlights of the event include a keynote presentation by Ross Gelbspan, award-winning journalist and author of Beat the Heat, who will speak about climate change at 7 p.m on Thursday, October 23 in Ira Allen Chapel. Prior to Mr. Gelbspan will be a production by "Beat the Heat" Theater and a presentation by Middlebury students Thomas Hand and Nick Benjamin describing their BioBus trip across country last summer fueled with straight vegetable oil. All this begins at 5:30 and open to the public free of charge.
Registration is required for Friday's conference and includes a keynote by Tufts University's Sarah Hammond Creighton who is author of Greening the Ivory Tower. Middlebury staff providing workshops on local purchasing, green building, recycling, composting and garnering administrative support include Matthew Biette, Tom McGinn, Linda Ross, Missy Paquette, Nan Jenks-Jay and Connie Leach Bisson. Howard E. Woodin Colloquium Series
Daniel Lashof, Natural Resources Defense Council, Climate Center Science Director will present "Global Warming: Emerging Federal and State Solutions" on Thursday, October 23rd. David Foster, Director of the Harvard Forest at Harvard University will speak on "Conservation at the Interface of Ecology and Environmental History" on Thursday, October 30th. All Howard E. Woodin Colloquium presentations take place in Bicentennial Hall Room 216 on Thursdays from 12:15-1:15 with lunch provided. These events are free and open to the public.
First Annual Symposium on Inspiration and Perspiration

On Thursday, October 30th at 7 p.m., the first annual symposium on Inspiration and Perspiration – focusing on Endurance this year-- will convene in Dana Auditorium.

RECYCLING JOBS
Students: Want a fun campus job – check out the Recycling Center just beyond the modulars at the bottom of the hill on Route 125. You can design your own schedule between 7:30-4:00 from Monday – Friday, working from two up to ten hours and the pay is $7.02/hour. Requirements: Dependability. Depending on the time of day, you may work in the Recycling Center or team up with a driver to service the recycling route. Call the Recycling Supervisor Missy Beckwith at x3087 or stop by the Recycling Center.

Environmental Council
The Environmental Council (EC) is a standing committee of the College that promotes environmental awareness to the campus community and provides guidance and recommendations to the President to ensure a safe and healthy environment and sound stewardship of resources. The College's Environmental Policy, the Guiding Principles for sustainable design, and the Construction and Demolition Recycling best management practices are three of the guidance documents that have been generated by the Environmental Council in recent years. This year, in addition to addressing on-going environmental issues, the EC has four subcommittees working on the following areas: Stewardship of College Lands, Campus Environmental Assessment, Paper Reduction, and the Earth Charter. The EC is co-Chaired by Nan Jenks-Jay and Steve Trombulak and includes appointments from the Faculty Council, Staff Council and Student Government Association. Members include: Faculty -- Jeff Munroe, Anne Knowles and David Stoll; Staff-- Connie Leach Bisson, Diane Munroe, Gail Smith, and Charlotte Tate; Students -- Philip Aroneanu, Carolyn Barnwell, McKalyn Garrity, Andrea Hamre, Erika Holsman, Suzanne Nagi, J.S. Woodward; Student Associates -- Ashley Clark, Robin Dean, Alyse Forrest, Kristin Fraser; and Ex Officio -- Asher Burns-Burg.
