Report and Recommendations by the Middlebury College Environmental Council
April 29, 1998
This report was completed by the members of the 1997-98 Environmental Council Audit Committee, with the help of a great many people. The impetus for conducting this report was a recommendation from the "Pathways to a Green Campus" Report, which suggested that Middlebury College complete an audit every few years.
"State of the Environment at Middlebury College" not only fulfills this recommendation, but takes it a step further. The members of the committee developed this report in a format which should be fairly easy to repeat on an annual basis. We focused on quantitative records which are already compiled yearly. By continuing to produce annual "State of the Environment" Reports such as this, Middlebury can begin to track our improvements and identify areas which require further development.
The first step following the publication of this report will be for the Environmental Council to set realistic goals as to which recommendations it would like to pursue in the coming year. The second step will be to begin work on an update for 1999.
The Audit Committee would like to thank all of the contacts in departments across the College who made this report possible. A complete list is included as an appendix. April Smith provided extremely helpful advice on audits in general and recommendations on where to go with ours. We also wish to thank the other members of the Environmental Council for their support.
