A note from President Liebowitz about the search for missing student Nicholas Garza '11

UPDATE, FEBRUARY 13, 4 P.M.

To the Middlebury College Community:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Nicholas Garza, a first-year student at Middlebury College who has been missing since Tuesday, February 5.

An exhaustive search of the Middlebury campus — involving the Middlebury Police Department, the Vermont State Police and Middlebury’s own Department of Public Safety and Facilities Services Office — has so far turned up no sign of Nick. The physical search was suspended because of bad weather on Wednesday, February 13, but was expected to resume on Saturday, February 16. And the investigation of Nick’s disappearance by the Middlebury Police Department, with the help of the Department of Public Safety, among others, is continuing. We urge anyone with relevant information to contact the Middlebury Police (388-3191) or Public Safety (443-5911).

To keep the College community informed, Dean of the College Tim Spears and Director of Public Safety Lisa Boudah will provide updated information at this Web site as it becomes available.

As we continue to hope for Nick’s safe return, we want our students to know that all of the College's support services and staff are available to help in this difficult time: the Commons deans and their residential life teams in the residence halls; Gary Margolis and his team at the Center for Counseling and Human Relations; as well as Chaplain Laurie Jordan and Associate Chaplain Ira Schiffer at the Scott Center for Spiritual and Religious Life.

Our thanks go out to those who have taken part in the search, enduring sometimes harsh winter conditions and long hours, and to the Middlebury colleagues who have done so much to help support Nick’s family and friends.
