A note to the Middlebury College community from President Ronald D. Liebowitz

We are now in week four since Nick Garza ’11 disappeared from our campus.

I write today with no new substantive information, which is as frustrating to me as I know it is for all members of the entire community. The Middlebury Police Department has provided updates on the investigation, and I remind you to check the College’s Web site for such updates:

I have spoken with many students over the last few weeks, and I understand how disturbing it is not to know why Nick has disappeared or where he is. I understand, too, that the constant presence of television cameras and investigators can be disconcerting. Let me remind you that nobody is under any obligation to speak to the media. However, we do ask you to cooperate with the police if asked. Though such inquiries can be unsettling, the officers are still trying to gather as many leads as possible to help find Nick.

Nick’s mom, Natalie Garza, continues to remain on campus during the investigation. She thanks everyone for the kindness, sensitivity, and support that she and her family have felt from the community.

Living with the uncertainty of the current situation is very difficult for all of us. Perhaps the best way to confront that difficulty is to be extra grateful for the gift of each day.

Meanwhile, we continue to hope and pray for Nick’s safe return.
