The Middlebury Police Department reported on Thursday, April 10, that the Saranac, N.Y., Fire Department Technical Rescue Team had completed a two-day search of the Otter Creek from the dam and waterfall in downtown Middlebury to the CVPS dam just south of the Pulp Mill Bridge. Nothing relevant to the investigation into the disappearance of Nicholas Garza was found.
Strong currents and high water conditions inhibited searchers’ ability to reach any definitive conclusion, and both the Saranac team and the Colchester Technical Rescue Team, which was on the scene for the first day of the search, recommend searching the river again when water levels return to normal.
The Middlebury Police also reported that MPD investigators will meet with members of the Vermont State Police Search and Rescue Team during the week of April 14 to formulate a wide-area ground search and plan for long-term operations.
