Primary Purpose

Provide primary responsibility and leadership for the Alliance for Civic Engagement (ACE), providing community-connected teaching, learning, service, and research opportunities for students.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

ACE Administration

§ Manage and coach ACE staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, time approval, development of work plans and establishment of priorities, problem solving, performance evaluations, etc.

§ Develop and manage departmental budgets—institutional, endowment, foundation, grants.

§ Reflect institutional priorities in development and implementation of ACE departmental strategic plans, both short- and long-term.

§ Identify and implement appropriate mechanisms for ACE to advance overall institutional priorities, including Knowledge Without Boundaries/the 2006 institutional strategic plan, the One Middlebury concept, Liberal Arts/Global Action--the Middlebury Campaign, etc.

§ Collaborate with other departmental and divisional heads to develop vision and implementation for experiential learning at Middlebury College.

§ Problem-solve and address risk management issues in departmental programming, and in response to related student and faculty initiatives.

§ Maintain cutting-edge understanding of professional field so as to maintain content-based expertise, observing standards for quality and applying “best practices.”

§ Oversee compiling of data and management of data base re. ACE-related Banner records and resources (e.g., community service records, undergraduate and alumni tags, etc.).

§ Represent the College in campus-community initiatives.

§ Ensure positive & effective communications, on- & off-campus, promoting ACE and the College.

§ Cultivate and provide follow up with donors and alumni connections.

§ Pursue incremental funding resources, as available (e.g., grant development and follow up).

§ Produce reports, as needed.

§ Participate in College committee work, as requested.

Community-Connected Teaching, Learning and Research (Service-Learning)

§ Oversee and develop community-connected learning opportunities on campus; serve as “connector” among students, faculty, and community partners (currently involving about 25-30 courses/year).

- Specifically, promote and support pedagogies involving service-learning, community-based learning, and community-based research.

§ Provide guidance, direction, and training to interested faculty regarding community-connected pedagogies (e.g., new faculty training, CTLR summer workshops, and other formal and informal mechanisms).

- Develop “best practice” innovations and solutions, providing problem-solving expertise.

- Lead discussion and training events.

- Identify and encourage participation in related conferences and institutes, etc., tapping statewide, regional and national venues.

§ Develop and coordinate effective working relations with Community Partners, following “best practice” standards, to realize the goals of the Alliance.

§ Administer the annual service-learning grant program for interested students and faculty, made possible by the Academic Outreach Endowment.

§ Help develop the international direction of ACE work to accurately reflect the overarching priority of a global perspective an integral part of a Middlebury education.

- Support collaboration among ACE, ECOLOGIA, MIIS, Language Schools, Schools Abroad, Off-campus Study program, Rohatyn Center, discipline-based departments, and other programs in order to promote and develop options for language immersion and international service-learning experiences.

§ Help facilitate and advise independent study student projects.

§ Assist the Dean of the Faculty in convening the Alliance for Civic Engagement Advisory Committee meetings throughout the academic year.

Poverty Studies   (Note: These initiatives also play an integral role in feeding the Community-Connected Teaching, Learning, & Research and Community Service sections, respectively.)

§ Serve as the institutional point person for the creation of a poverty studies minor through continued pursuit of the federal consortium grant under the direction of the Washington and Lee University Shepherd Program for the Interdisciplinary Study of Poverty and Human Capability.

- Oversee and facilitate the funded summer Shepherd internships.

- Serve as the institutional grant liaison, in anticipation of receipt of $150K/year for 5 years.

- Develop internship possibilities to contribute to national bank through W&L.

§ Recruit and collaborate with interested faculty in related program development.

§ Develop anti-poverty programming in response to local and global needs that engage students and faculty in meaningful ways, laying the ground work for the Poverty Studies minor (pending consortium grant funding).

- Facilitate and support the ACE-PACT-United Way of Addison County partnership.

- Oversee and facilitate the funded summer Anti-Poverty Internships in Addison County.

- Develop focus area(s) and write annual Vermont Campus Compact (VCC) AmeriCorps VISTA grant(s); upon approval recruit and supervise participation.

o Participate in VCC VISTA supervisor meetings.

o Provide VCC statewide VISTA supervisor training, as needed.

- Develop and oversee related community partnerships between the College and interested individuals, agencies, and organizations.

Community Service

§ Ensure that a vibrant community service program is available on campus that provides students with opportunities to learn more about themselves, explore potential career fields, and become engaged with and in the community, while also meeting community-identified needs—reciprocity and reflection are key components of the philosophical approach (involving ~ 1500 students/yr).

§ Help in a “connector” role as the College strives to help meet local needs.

- Support the ACE-PACT-United Way of Addison County Partnership.

- Help cultivate new partnerships, as time and need allow.

§ Assist with the Bicentennial Awards process.

§ Oversee and advise Butch’s Team activities.

§ Provide institutional support for annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

§ Assist with the campus leadership for the Middlebury College United Way Campaign.

Vermont Campus Compact

§ Serve as the official College liaison with VCC and function as the on-campus administrator to address issues of oversight (for the President).

§ Take advantage of grant and other opportunities that build capacity and/or bring in additional resources to our work at Middlebury (totaling nearly $200,000 to date).

§ Participate in network meetings, trainings and events, etc.

§ Develop the grant request(s), handle the paperwork, oversee the recruitment, and supervise the A*VISTA member(s), when grant applications are approved.

Education & Training

Master's degree or equivalent experience in the field. Related computer skills required.

Experience

Familiarity with K-H education, NFP organizations and agencies, and community-based work. Experience with community–connected pedagogies, volunteer management, and mentoring program management. Fund raising experience and donor cultivation and follow up.

Knowledge

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Highly motivated, able to work independently, provide volunteer orientation and leadership training, manage issues of confidentiality, and effectively motivate others. Strong ties to Middlebury/Addison County.
