Primary Purpose

To aid with operational direction of and strategic planning for the Alliance for Civic Engagement to provide more opportunities for students to link what is learned in the classroom with applied work in the community and the larger society through both academic and co-curricular means, with particular attention devoted to communications and the deveopment, implementation, and administration of our global civic engagement initiatives.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

Oversee development, implementation, and administration of office strategic planning, in coordination with Director, staff, and key stakeholders, targeting involvement with faculty and students alike, in both curricular and co-curricular activities.

Develop and direct all aspects of Communications for ACE (e.g., web, newsletters, brochures, window displays, etc.).

Develop, implement, and administer the international realm of ACE's civic engagement initiatives:

  • Strategic planning for ACE global civic engagement program.
  • Promotion of civic engagement opportunities as part of Study/Schools Abroad program.
  • Community partner development (e.g., World Leadership Corps, DREAM (Dominican Republic Education And Mentoring Program), Earth Charter, ECOLOGIA, etc.).
  • Educational partner development (e.g., MIIS, Oxford, etc.).
  • Liaison with the following groups as part of program development and implementation:
    • Staff colleagues in Off-campus Study, RAJ, and CSO
    • ISSS to promote international student involvement
    • United World Colleges to promote UWC student involvement
  • Help design and lead Winter Term offerings, as appropriate.
  • Donor cultivation and support.

Oversee student Middlebury Alternative Break Trips:

  • Advise on planning, fundraising, training, and risk management (currently there are four trips including two international trips and two domestic trips involving over 40 students).

Promote Student Engagement in Issues of Social Justice and Democracy:

  • Work on student engagement in democracy and the political process, including promotion of voter registration and voting
  • Supervise student staff coordinator
  • Assist with meetings and related programming with students

Oversee all aspects of the annual Public Service Leadership Awards:

  • On- and off-campus promotion
  • Collection and dissemination of nomination forms
  • Coordination with Public Affairs office
  • Logistics with Facilities, Catering, Reprographics, etc.
  • Follow up with student award recipients

Assist with Anti-Poverty Work:

  • Support of AmeriCorps VISTA Member with design and implementation of programming initiatives, as necessary
  • Support of ACE-PACT (People of Addison County Together), United Way of Addison County partnership initiatives, as necessary

Supervise the following Student Staff positions:

  • Communications Intern
  • Student Action Liaison
  • MAlt Liaison

Other:

  • Work with Director on community partner development and support for service-learning (and other community-connected learning) opportunities
  • Cultivate potential projects and partnerships to support pedagogies of engagement with faculty
  • Supervise/administer the Corporation for National Service AmeriCorps Ed Award Only program and participants
  • Liaison with Careers for the Common Good to ensure continuity between complementary nature of office initiatives
  • Represent the Alliance on community-related initiatives, networks, and committees, as needed (e.g., Vermont Campus Compact, etc.)
  • Promote the work of the Alliance on campus and within the community
  • Pursue the support grants and other forms of funding, as needed
  • Assist with documentation, recordkeeping, reporting, etc., with regard to individual responsibilities

Education & Training

Master's or postgraduate degree or equivalent related work experience for a minimum of six years, required.

Experience

Very strong public relations and publications experience; understanding of the meaning and role of local, national, and global citizenship; knowledge of current events and trends; and experience with volunteer coordination and civic engagement, preferred.  Development experience useful.  Strong ties to Middlebury area and Addison County, along with international experience, preferred.

Knowledge

Very strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.  Ability to lead and motivate others, while also maintaining confidentiality, as appropriate.  Expertise with community-connected teaching, research, and learning pedagagies, volunteer management, leadership training, global civic engagement, and donor cultivation.  Appropriate computer skills.
