Primary Purpose

Develops, maintains and administers Middlebury College's Environmental Health and Safety Program to ensure the well being of employees, students and the community.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Ensures College compliance with federal, state regulations and College policies and procedures.


*Inspects all operations being performed on campus for compliance with College and government regulations.


Develops and administers environmental health and safety programs including the areas of Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Safety.


Occupational Safety will include but not be limited to Hazard Communication, IAQ, Ergonomics, Bloodborne Pathogens, Respirator Protection and air monitoring (confined space).


*Verifies College compliance to various Vermont DEC and federal EPA regulations.


*Manages the College's disaster/emergency response plan, College driver's license, College Emergency Response Team, new employee safety orientation and room capacity programs.


Develops and manages the College's safety budget.


Supervises student intern.


*Reviews and follows up on accidents and incidents involving employees, visitors and others.


Provides resource assistance to outside organizations approved by the College including but not limited to Porter Hospital, AVIC Pooling and other independent colleges in Vermont.


Reviews, recommends and conducts training and education for employees and/or students regarding safety related issues.


Recommends safety equipment purchases.


Consults with contractors, Safety Committee and College departments on safety issues.  Participates in construction meetings and/or committees as required.


*Conducts safety inspections throughout campus to identify and correct potential safety hazards.


Assists with Worker's Compensation program.


Works with the College's insurance companies regarding their risk management programs.

Education & Training

B.S. in Environmental Health & Safety or equivalent

Experience

3-5 years of experience in educational or industrial safety.

Knowledge

Knowledge of state and federal safety and environmental regulations to include but not limited to OSHA/VOSHA, Vermont DEC, EPA and NFPA standards.

Other

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
