Primary Purpose

As Assistant to the Director of the Bread Loaf School of English, evaluates new student applications and makes admission decisions; works with the Director to devise strategies for recruitment of new students.


 


Coordinates, compiles, and edits Bread Loaf publications, including the bulletin, poster, website, and various flyers, brochures, and internal manuals. Works with Director on grant proposals and reports. Helps identify funding sources. Works on special projects and assists the Director as needed.


 


As Assistant to the Dean of Graduate and Special Programs, assists the Dean in supporting the College's summer and special programs. Acts as Dean's on-campus liaison.


 

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

 


Assistant to Director of BLSE and Director of BLSE Admissions


* Evaluates new applicants to Bread Loaf and makes decision to admit or deny (consulting with Director on problem cases). Advises new applicants as needed.


* Acts as academic advisor to students, disussing course selection, Master of Letters (M.Litt) programs, admission, etc., when the Director is not available.


* Updates, edits, puts into production, and oversees distribution of annual Bread Loaf bulletin, poster, and advertising copy, in consultation with Director. Does the same with various flyers, brochures, and internal manuals (student handbook, procedures manual for summer office staff at Oxford, Alaska, and New Mexico locations).


* Works with the Director to devise strategies for recruitment of new students. Reviews relevant publications, web sites, mailing lists, etc.


* Assists Director with the writing and submission of grant proposals and reports, monitoring compliance with grant requirements. Works with Grants office to identify funding sources.


* Works with other College offices (Admissions, College Advancement, Page One) as required on Bread Loaf-related activities.


* Assists Associate Director of BLSE in implementing an improved system for overseeing individual M.Litt. programs.


* Helps to coordinate special institutes and conferences; oversees the relations between grant-funded programs and the regular Bread Loaf curriculum.


 


Assistant to the Dean of Graduate and Special Programs


* Acts as on-campus liaison between the Dean and College administrative offices.


* Represents Dean at on-campus meetings when appropriate.


* Assists Dean in identifying grant opportunities when requested by graduate and special programs.


* Solicits and collects annual reports.


* Helps to maintain regular contact between Dean and College offices; schedules appointments when he is on campus.


* Maintains calendar of visits concerning schools abroad and other relevant visits and events.


* Assists Dean in compiling information (general operating procedures, budgets, salaries, etc.) in order to get an overview of relevant issues.


 


 

Education & Training

Master's degree or equivalent experience required, preferably in English or American literature.

Experience

3-5 years administrative experience, preferably in a higher education environment.

Knowledge

Writing and editing skills. Basic knowledge of relevant computer and web applications. Familiarity with literary studies, academic standards, and the Bread Loaf program. Familiarity with issues of importance to secondary school teachers. Familiarity with Middlebury College administrative structure.


 

Other

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; able to work on a variety of projects simultaneously in a team-oriented setting, responding to rapidly changing priorities.
