Primary Purpose

Reporting to the Executive Director, serves as member of Career Services management team, with Senior Associate Director, consulting and making recommendations on issues affecting strategic planning, office operations, programming, and personnel. Assumes creative leadership and operational direction for further development of comprehensive liberal arts domestic and international internship programs. Oversees design and implementation of Career Counseling programs for first–third-year students. Supervises the Assistant Director for Internships, Career Counselor/Resource Coordinator, Administrative Assistant for Internships and Career Development, and part-time Career Counselor.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

  • Manages Internship team—Assistant Director for Internships and Administrative Assistant for Internships and Career Development—in the collection and dissemination of information about undergraduate internship opportunities, maintenance of two internship databases, communication with internship sponsors and students, and administration of the Winter Term and funded internship processes.
  • Manages Career Counselor/Resource Coordinator and part-time Career Counselor in providing individual career counseling, workshops, assessments, and programs to students and in maintaining and updating hard-copy and online resources.
  • Provides creative leadership in the development, implementation, and assessment of appropriate career exploration programs for first-, second-, and third-year students.
  • Schedules and sets agenda for monthly counselors’ meetings. Oversees counseling/Drop-Ins scheduling.
    Develops new internship programs with representation across the curriculum.
  • Convenes an Internship Advisory Committee to assist in the oversight of internship development with sensitivity toward academic rigor, when necessary.
  • Creates and manages an academic department liaison program to encourage dialogue about and participation in internships across the curriculum and to maintain effective working relationships between the internship program and the faculty.
  • Manages the development of networks of Middlebury connections that will provide ongoing referral for additional internship opportunities.
  • Designs and delivers outreach and programming to all students to foster interest in the internship experience; creates and delivers informational programming for students interested in internship possibilities.
  • Manages the administration of the assignment of all funds designated as internship stipends.
  • Establishes and oversees a centralized clearinghouse for all internship opportunities available for Middlebury students. Makes clearinghouse known throughout campus community and encourages its use.
  • Designs Internship Program materials for both on-campus and off-campus distribution.
  • Manages the development of statistical reporting on internship activity.
  • Counsels students on internship search strategies; provides practice interview opportunities to assist students in preparation for internship interviews.

Education & Training

Master's degree.

Experience

5-10 years of professional experience. Internship experience a plus. Experience in development, alumni relations, public relations, marketing or another field in which primary responsibility is to build programs/clientele. Experience in program design, development and implementation. Budget management experience a plus.

Knowledge

Familiarity with career fields of interest to liberal arts students.

Other

Evidence of strong public speaking and administrative skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
