Primary Purpose

Supports co-curricular education and development of Middlebury College students in a context with particular focus on issues of diversity and promotion/development of an enhanced residential plan, particularly how campus-wide planning fits in with and relates to the Commons vision.  Oversees the planning, implementation and assessment of co-curricular programming and policies regarding student development and student social life campus-wide.  Advises, coordinates and oversees activities of campus-wide programming board, social houses and InterCommons Council and use of McCullough Student Center.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Supervises professional staff - Outdoor Programs Director an Assistant Director of Campus Activities for Student Organizations and Administration - and one support staff- Administrative Program Coordinator.


*Hires, trains, schedules and approves time off for professional, support and student staff.


*Prepares and monitors budgets for six College accounts and monitors budgets and activities of 165 campus organizations.


* Advises MCAB - integrated Activities Board.


*Advises Winter Carnival.


*Advises The Campus - student newspaper.


*Advises WRMC - student radio station.


*Advises the Finance Committee, Constitution, and Leadership Committees of the Student Government Association.


*Advises InterCommons Council and works with the ICC towards the goal of the Commons System.


*Assists Commons Faculty Heads and Deans in development of commons-based student governance.


*Serves as consultant to Commons Councils and Faculty Heads on issues of leadership and teambuilding.


*Works with Commons Councils to develop group unity and leadership.


*Advises the InterHouse Counsel and assists with leadership training including training and orientation.


*Advises Social House leadership on issues pertaining to College policy.


*Oversees discipline for social house organizations.


*Updates guidelines and regulations for Social Houses.


*Serves as a standing member of the House Review Subcommittee of the Community Council.


*Assists with the planning of Orientation Trip and assists with other Orientation planning.


*Plans and facilitates leadership training programs with special emphasis on Commons and student group development.


*Assists with transition to the enhanced residential system and the role of Center for Campus Activities & Leadership within that plan including the enhanced student center.


*Directs and oversees operations of the McCullough Student Center including maintenance and technical development.


*Hires, supervises and trains 15-20 student staff members (supervisory and technical) for the McCullough Student Center.


*Supports Summer Language School programs in the McCullough Student Center and campus radio station.


*Negotiates contracts and coordinates interdepartmental concerns.


*Monitors 18 facilities that fall under the auspices of the Center for Campus Activities & Leadership including the newspaper office, radio station, recording studio, and band practice room.


*Develops and reviews policies for student events and organizations.


*Chairs or serves on committees to create or amend College policies regarding co-curricular activities, social programming, alcohol and fundraising.


*Fosters a sense of community that encourages and promotes diversity among campus-wide programming, student center programming and student organizations.

*Coordinates "This is Vermont" and assists with other Orientation planning.


*Acts as primary liaison with the Grille.


*Advises and supervises major student organizations and coordinates their advisory boards including MCAB and student media.


*Plans and develops Leadership Training programs.


*Discusses and develops alcohol policies for social events.


*Attends weekly deans and security meetings.

Education & Training

Master's degree or equivalent experience.

Experience

3-5 years of professional student activities experience including student center coordination, leadership training, advising, programming, contract negotiation, policy development and budgeting.

Knowledge

Knowledge of student center coordination, student development theory within a liberal arts environment, programming and contract negotiation.  Computer familiarity.

Other

Willingness to quickly become familiar with Middlebury College policies.
