Primary Purpose

Supports co-curricular education and development of Middlebury College students through the facilitation of students' active enjoyment and responsible use of the outdoor envirtonment, through the provision of sound outdoor skills and outdoor leadership training. Serve as primary coordinator of a vigorous program of outdoor skills and leadership courses for students, faculty, and staff. Serve as a resource to all campus groups using outdoor activities for leadership development and team building.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

* Provides administration and management of outdoor skills and leadership development program; develops safety standards and risk management plans; develops and manages annual operating budget; maintains records of programs, trips, accidents and incidents; responsible for overall coordination and supervision of student employees.

*Instructs a significant portion of the Middlebury Outdoor Programs field courses.

* Develops student trip leader positions and training for Middlebury Outdoor Programs; monitors the requirements and expectations for a multi-level student leadership structure; develops and monitors a peer and self -evaluation system for student trip leaders.

* Develops course formats, teaching progressions and guidelines for all activities offered by Middlebury Outdoor Programs.

* Directs the pre-orientation trip programs (MOO and FOO).

*Maintanes Middlebury's Outdoor Resource Center.

* Trains advisers for the Middlebury Mountain Club and other outdoor oriented student

organizations and assists with issues regarding safety and liability.

* Monitors programs for conformance with accepted industry standards, federal and state regulations, and land land management permits.

* Selects and purchases equipment. Negotiates best possible pricing from suppliers/manufacturers.

* Performs contract negotiations as needed.

* Supports growth and development of enhanced residential plan; serves on committees as

needed; and attends Student Affairs staff meetings.

* Other duties as assigned.

Education & Training

Master's degree preferred. Professional cerifications or training highly desirable (AMGA, ACA, WEA, NOLS IC, etc).Current WFR or WEMT certification required.

Experience

Theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the areas of outdoor education, risk management, leadership development, program and curriculum design, program administration and management, and group facilitation required. At minimum, the successful candidate will also have significant wilderness leadership experience in all seasons. Additionally, the OPD will need a high level of technical and instructional experience and proficiency in a number of outdoor pursuits including some or all of the following: Rock and ice climbing, mountaineering, expedition canoeing, backcountry and telemark skiing, and whitewater kayaking.

Knowledge

Knowledge of student development theory, program planning and outdoor education/leadership within a liberal arts context. Intermediate computer skills.

Other

Half of time spent outdoors--half of time spent indoors; exposure to various weather conditions; work with chemicals or substances requiring safety precautions or work with equipment or weather conditions requiring constant attention; required to work some irregular hours in the evenings and/or on weekends; some travel, driving long distance, and a valid VT drivers license required.
