Primary Purpose

The Staff Counselor provides short-term counseling, crisis intervention, and mental health outreach services to enhance the psychological and emotional welfare of students and the College community. As the Middlebury College student body is comprehensively diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic and international background--this position requires the applicant to have demonstrated educational and clinical knowledge, experience and expertise in these areas. The applicant will understand the depth of need of these students, the unique difficulties they can encounter in higher education and a commitment to supporting students in this process.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

 

  • Works collaboratively with others, including multidisciplinary mental health and College medical staff, deans and student affairs staff.
  • Demonstrates experience and expertise in cross-cultural and multicultural individual, group counseling and outreach services.
  • Receives clinical and administrative support from the Director of Counseling.
  • Engages in psychological counseling with individual students and student groups and records notes of sessions.
  • Attends consultation meetings with other departments as needed.
  • Trains and supports residence hall staff, faculty and clinical intern as needed.
  • Reviews and recommends appropriate assessment instruments and other clinical interventions and mental health programs for students.
  • Performs related responsibilities as necessary to properly assess and counsel students.

Education & Training


M.A., M.S.W.,Ed,D, or Ph.D.in clinical field. Formal training in clinical assessment and counseling. Demonstrated skills and experience in multi-cultural counseling.

Experience


3 - 5 years of clinical experience required.

Knowledge


Must maintain and update knowledge of current assessment and counseling techniques and professional license and/or certificates. Also, see above.
