Primary Purpose

Facilitate the missions of the Performing Arts Series (PAS) and the Mahaney Center for the Arts (MCFA) through curation and coordination of programming, and the management of artist residencies and educational outreach. Develops systems for efficient and high-quality event management. Contributes as an active member of a self-directed work/management team.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

PERFORMING ARTS SERIES

  • Curates and books series programming of chamber music (to include classical, contemporary, jazz and world music) and collaborates on dance, theatre and world arts programming.
  • Negotiates, executes and signs all contracts for alignment with college policies, and ensures contractual obligations are realized. Consults regarding artistic contract development with campus constituents.
  • Develops artist residencies and oversees educational outreach presented for college academic programs, local students, teachers, and community. Maintains relationships critical to outreach initiatives.
  • Develops contracts, letters of support, and itineraries as needed for U.S. visa petitions and coordinates with appropriate organizations. Stays current on immigration law as related to foreign national artists, plus O and P visa regulations.
  • Develops systems and consults with artists, agents and college tax manager to collect all vital information required for foreign national tax determination. Stays current on tax code as relevant to international artists.
  • Supervises all logistical elements of PAS artist residencies, events and performances. Maintains relationships with technical organizations, hospitality and travel organizations, and local vendors to facilitate successful artist visits.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with artists, agents, and presenters to maximize the series’ artistic and economic value.
  • Represents PAS/Middlebury at regional consortia and professional conferences.
  • Regularly attends festivals, consortia, and showcases to stay abreast of programmatic trends.
  • Serves as Performing Arts Series liaison to the MCFA and COTA.
  • Pursues grant opportunities, plus generates statistical analysis and support materials for arts related grants.
  • Resource and consultant to College Advancement on funding implications for Series.
  • Develops/maintains PAS web pages, and presence in social media outlets. Coordinates artistic and repertoire information for arts publications and program books.
  • Assists with academic/campus “Curricular Connections” as related to PAS artist residencies.
  • Consults on arts events presented by other departments as needed
  • Maintains current research on artists/management companies and regional touring.

GENERAL/SHARED WITH MCFA MANAGEMENT TEAM

  • Plans proactively and innovatively to support the artistic initiatives of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Provides guidance on complex issues, work management and resource management. Manages resources to advance the performing and visual arts in our community.
  • Develops and implements long and short-term MCFA strategies, policies, procedures and standards. Interpret policies, establish organizational direction, strategic goals and objectives. Assumes responsibility vis-a-vis faculty and administration to work toward these goals with integrity and professionalism.
  • Serves as MCFA liaison to selected arts areas and Commons.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff on special events, initiatives, and symposia.
  • Handles team personnel matters as needed, including peer performance evaluations, vacation scheduling, employee relations, professional development opportunities, and hiring.
  • Represents the MCFA management staff on assigned committees. Coordinates staff meetings with rotational leadership.
  • Promotes organizational teamwork, participative management, customer service, and collaborative problem solving. Maintains flexibility and willingness to contribute to the resolution of problems.
  • Collaborates with MCFA staff on event compliance related to ADA and campus safety concerns.
  • Works with other members of the management team on grant development and stewardship.
  • Communicates effectively and appropriately, verbally and in writing, with individuals of extremely diverse backgrounds and large groups. Occasional public presentations required. Ability to listen and consider the views of others. Facilitate group meetings.

Education & Training

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred. Emphasis of study in a performing arts genre a plus.

Experience

Progressively responsible professional experience, a portion of which is in a higher education environment, is required.

Broad based and fully developed management experience, with a demonstrated record in artistic programming and events management.

Familiarity with arts education/outreach programs and development of artist residencies desired.

Knowledge

Familiarity with performing arts genres, particularly music.

Demonstrates strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Computer literate.

Knowledge of Vermont’s educational "Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities" helpful. Knowledge of foreign national visa and tax regulations.

Maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate required evening and weekend work.

Must be willing to be on-call for artists' needs for duration of residency.

Must work at a computer for several hours a day. Must climb stairs on a daily basis.

Some events during the year require long periods of standing. Must lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. Maintain a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain college vehicle permit.
