Primary Purpose

Develops, implements, and manages the communications plan for the Arts at Middlebury. Plans strategically to maximize the profile of the Arts at Middlebury, and develop future audiences. Oversees the College’s Box Office operations and ticket services. Contributes as an active member of a self-directed work/management team.

GENERAL/SHARED WITH MCFA MANAGEMENT TEAM

  • Plans proactively and innovatively to support the artistic initiatives of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Manages resources to advance the performing and visual arts in our community.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of Mahaney Center for the Arts goals and objectives. Assumes responsibility vis-a-vis faculty and administration to work toward these goals with integrity and professionalism.
  • Serves as MCFA liaison to selected arts areas: currently, the Museum of Art; the Theatre program, and the Committee on the Arts.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff on special events, initiatives, and symposia.
  • Handles team personnel matters as needed, including peer performance evaluations, vacation scheduling, employee relations, professional development opportunities, and hiring.
  • Represents the MCFA management staff on assigned committees. Coordinates staff meetings with rotational leadership.
  • Maintains flexibility and willingness to contribute to the resolution of problems.
  • Collaborates with MCFA staff on event compliance related to ADA and campus safety concerns.
  • Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

COMMUNICATIONS/AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT

  • Plans strategically to maximize the profile of the Arts at Middlebury. Looks for ways to celebrate and promote the Arts as a vital and integrated part of the Middlebury experience.
  • Develops and implements a marketing/public relations plan for the Arts at Middlebury College.
  • Facilitates strong, continued attendance and participation in arts events and experiences at Middlebury College.
  • Serves as the editor for the Arts Calendar, Arts newsletter, season posters, ArtsMail, Curricular Connections, and other communications vehicles.
  • Develops, updates, and maintains the Arts at Middlebury’s web presence; serves as point person to Web Services and Electronic Communications staff.
  • Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with the media. Pitches stories on a periodic basis. Serves as the key point person with the Office of Public Affairs and Communications Department for arts-related communications efforts.
  • Serves as Arts at Middlebury’s liaison to surrounding arts presenters and consortia; business, travel, and tourism community; and other campus offices, such as the Office of College Advancement, Office of Alumni and Parent Programs, Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, and others.
  • Explores opportunities for curricular connections between the CFA and academic departments across campus, via the Curricular Connections program and more.
  • Researches and programs selected arts events each year, in collaboration with relevant departments and staff (Performing Arts Series, Department of Theatre and Dance, etc.)
  • Pursues appropriate grant opportunities, working cooperatively with other staff.
  • Maintains archival records of marketing and PR items.
  • Works with Dining Services/Catering to coordinate pre-performance meals.

BOX OFFICE

  • Responsible for developing and implementing Box Office services for the College. Oversees the operation of all box office locations. Supervises ticket sales for all ticketed events at MCFA and other sites, as appropriate.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises the Box Office Coordinator and Customer Relations Associate. Provides supervisory guidance to those positions in their work with student workers.
  • Works with Athletics, Student Activities, College Advancement, and the College administration to coordinate their event ticketing needs.
  • Serves as budget administrator for the box office budget, with assistance in budget tracking and management from Associate Director for Operations. Negotiates cross-campus budget support of Central Campus Box Office with Athletics, CCAL, Business Services, and other departments.
  • Responsible for all aspects of ticketing software and for optimal maintenance of the computer network and online box office and payment services.
  • Occasionally performs retail box office duties.

Education & Training

Bachelor degree. Education in the arts and arts administration helpful.

Experience

Communications plan development, including but not limited to print publications, web communications, broadcast, and spokesperson roles. Familiarity with a variety of promotional formats. Computerized box office experience, preferably at managerial level.

Knowledge

Demonstrates strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Demonstrates strong competence with computers and technology, particularly word processing programs, graphics, and web authoring software. Knowledge of TixSales or similar computerized box office systems helpful.

Demonstrates strong communications skills, written and oral. Knowledge of standard copy editing and proofreading styles (APA, Chicago) helpful.

Supervisory skills managing a staff assistant, other staff, and students.

Maintains a flexible schedule to accommodate required night and weekend hours.

Must be able to work at a computer for several hours a day. Ability to lift 25 pounds occasionally.
