Primary Purpose

Provide managerial, academic and supervisory support in theatre technology for the Theatre Program's productions during the academic year, and for the summer theatre program of the Language Schools.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

Manages and/or supervises work of all aspects of technical production for faculty shows, with the exception of costumes, in conjunction with other design/tech personnel.  This includes scheduling time and personnel, budgeting, and purchasing.


Teaches technical theatre skills, in conjunction with other design/tech personnel, to students enrolled in production classes.


Organizes, supervises, and schedules students enrolled in production classes, in conjunction with other design/tech personnel; evaluates students in these classes.


Responsible for supervising Theatre Program employees to include hiring, performance evaluations, counseling, etc.


Hires, trains and supervises paid student workers.


Assures the safety of students working in the shops and spaces, when they are working under direct supervision.


Assists designers and directors in developing technical plans and schedules for theatre productions.


Prepares for and supervises technical rehearsals and performance of faculty productions, in conjunction with other design/tech personnel, including training and supervision of student stage managers.


Assures maintenance of department equipment and facilities.


Specifies and purchases all technical equipment, materials and supplies. 


Monitors production budgets.


Manages and/or supervises special projects as they arise, such as ACTF.


Advises students working on independent projects (departmental and non-departmental).


Provides management and technical support for guest artist/group performances.


Supervises assistant technical director.


 


Summer:


Manages Language School theatre productions.


Designs and executes all aspects of productions, except costumes, for approximately 8-10 shows per summer.

Supervises summer theatre staff.

Education & Training

MFA in Theatre Production.  BFA in Theatre Production with substantial professional experience.

Experience

3-5 years' professional experience in regional or academic theatre.  Extensive experience in theatre carpentry and standard shop practices.  Extensive experience in teaching and supervising students.  Experience in working collaboratively with directors, designers and students.  Experience in budgeting money, materials, personnel and time.  Experience in some aspect of design.

Knowledge

Standard theatre shop practices; drafting; properties work including sewing, foams, painting and crafts; theatre carpentry; rigging; sound and light systems maintenance and use; welding - MIG and oxy-acetylene; electronic diagnosis and repair; soldering; scene painting materials, tools and techiques; safety equipment and procedures; repair and maintenance of power tools; personnel, time, money and materials management and organization.  Knowledge of theatre history, theatre design history, art history.

Other

Must know how to use wood working tools, theatrical rigging, lighting and sound equipment, metal-working tools, computers, sewing machines.
