Primary Purpose

Responsible for the development, implementation and management of the museum's educational programs for diverse audiences including the Middlebury College community, general public and area schools.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

Directs the museum educational activities in relation to the museum's collections, special exhibitions and special events, and conducts such activities personally or coordinates or supervises others (i.e. students and volunteers) in conducting them.


Facilitates the use of the collections and other resources of the museum by academic departments of Middlebury College and other institutions of higher learning.


Implements and oversees a museum docent program, including recruitment, training, supervision and coordination of student and community volunteers.


Provides timely information about the museum's education programs to appropriate departments of the college and to the general public, using existing resources of the museum and the college.


Works with the director and other staff and the college Grants Office to secure additional funding to further the educational programs of the museum.


Coordinates the activities of the Baer Intern and the other museum academic year and summer interns.

Maintains and increases professional standing through study, research and writing in the philosophy of museum education and substantive areas of art history.

Education & Training

College degree in art education, art history, studio art or related field.  Teacher certificate helpful.

Experience

Experience managing and supervising students and volunteers in a museum setting.  Previous museum education experience important.

Knowledge

 

Other

Strong communication, organizational and presentation skills required, as well as proved writing skills.
