Primary Purpose

In conjunction with the Technical Director, provides managerial, academic, and supervisory support in theatre technology for the Theatre Program's productions during the academic year and for the summer theatre program of the Language Schools.


 

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Must be able to manage and take on the role as the Technical Director when Technical Director is not available.


Instruction:


Teaches technical theatre skills to students enrolled in production classes.


Teaches technical theatre skills to student employees.


Shares responsibility for training student stage managers for faculty shows.


Works with faculty Scenic and Lighting Design Professor to address lecture sections of Production Studio classes on topics related to theatrical production as needed.


Shares responsibility for evaluating students enrolled in lab sessions in conjunction with Theatre Design Faculty.


Scene Shop/Theatre supervision:


Supervises students working in the theatre and shops.


Shares responsibility for the creating a safe work environment in the theatres and shops.


Maintains production equipment and workspaces.

Responsible for maintaining inventory of shop equipment and supplies.

Assists in lighting and sound technology/maintenance.


Properties:


Responsible for properties for faculty shows, including research, design, building and purchasing.


Responsible for overseeing the loan of department properties to students and outside theatre groups.


Responsible for maintaining inventory of properties.


Technical Direction/Production:


Shares responsibility for planning faculty productions, including preparing working drawings, monitoring budgets and purchasing supplies.


Builds scenic elements and/or properties beyond the scope of students' skills.


Assists in providing technical support for visiting theatre productions.


Assists in preparing for and supervising technical rehearsals and performance of faculty productions.


Undertakes special projects as required, e.g. coordinating technical aspects of American College Theatre Festival tour.

Language Schools:

Prepares rehearsal schedule for Summer Language School session.


Assists in all aspects of designing, building and organizing Language School theatre productions (7 to 9 shows in WMT), including properties, scenery, painting, lighting and sound.


In the absence of the Technical Director, carries full responsibility for all shared duties described above.

Education & Training

BFA or BA in Theatre required.

Experience

Minimum of 3 to 4 years of professional experience in summer stock, regional theatres, or academic theatres.  Extensive experience in teaching and supervising student crews.  Experience in set design, paint, properties, lights or sound.  Standard theater shop practices; drafting; properties work, including sewing foams, painting and crafts; theater carpentry including hand, power and pneumatic tools; rigging (hemp and counterweight); sound and light system maintenance; welding-- MIG and oxy-acetylene; scene painting materials, tools and techniques; safety equipment and procedures; basic repair and maintenance of power tools; personnel, time, money and materials management and organization. Experience working collaboratively with designers, directors and students.

Knowledge

Computer skills including: use of CAD, spreadsheet, word processing, graphic manipulation, database and internet research programs, as well as technical lighting and sound programs.  Current titles include Vectorworks, MSExcel, MSWord, Photoshop, FileMaker Pro, Netscape/MS Explorer, Lexis Nexis, Lightwrite and MacLux Pro.

Other

This position requires working closely with students and requires skills in instructing and supervising.  This position requires collaborating closely with designers, directors, faculty and other staff.  This position requires the ability to schedule and organize self and others in order to meet deadlines.  This position requires work on evenings and weekends to support productions.
