Primary Purpose

The Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations works strategically with the college's leadership and constituent programs to secure gifts for institutional priorities. This position is central to orchestrating a comprehensive approach to seeking institutional support from and maintaining relationships with corporations, private foundations, and federal agencies. In addition to raising financial support for academic programs, the work of this office increases the visibility of the College nationally and internationally.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

 

  • Direct, promote, and develop corporate, private foundation, and federal support for Middlebury’s academic priorities
  • Develop relationships with the College’s academic and constituent program leadership, including leaders at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, in order to understand their priorities and identify appropriate corporate, foundation, or federal agency support
  • Create and implement strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward corporate and foundation prospects and donors, as well as federal grant agencies
  • Endeavor to establish long-term partnerships and strengthen existing relationships with the corporate and foundation sector that will result in funding for immediate and long-term goals of the College
  • Coordinate the development of proposals with College administrators and faculty to successfully secure gifts/grants to meet institutional priorities
  • Write and edit grant proposals
  • Advise the President and staff him on key corporate and foundation calls
  • Direct all grant acknowledgment activities
  • Meet on a regular basis with direct report(s) to review development activity, to assess strategies in place for corporate and foundation prospects, to ensure distribution of necessary follow-up reports and letters, and to direct the coordination of appropriate gift announcements


Organizational Relationships:


  • Reports to the Director of Principal Gifts and has a liaison role with the Provost
  • Works collaboratively with academic deans and directors, the directors of principal and leadership gifts, the Director of Development for Graduate Programs, and the Executive Director of Institutional Advancement at MIIS to coordinate grant seeking efforts, especially in instances where private foundations and individual donors overlap
  • Collaborates with the Office of Sponsored Research
  • Supervises the office’s daily operations, budget, and support staff

 

Education & Training

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred
  • Experience


     

    • Minimum of five years of experience with corporate and foundation work, preferably in an academic setting, or at least five years working in a related and relevant setting that includes marketing, communications and writing in support of and within an academic environment.


     

    Knowledge

     

  • Knowledge of how curriculum at a higher education institution is structured and renewed is critical

    • Ability to meet project deadlines and maintain productive professional relationships
    • Must be able to travel regionally and nationally as required and to work weekends and evenings as necessary
