Primary Purpose

Supervises Commons residence halls, acts as a mentor and advisor for residents, serves as a liaison between students and administration and provides academic and personal support for Commons residents.  Provides support for Commons Dean, Faculty Head and Commons Council.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

Lives in residence halls and oversees life within the Commons.


Is readily available and accessible to residents.


Works closely as part of a team with Commons Dean, Faculty Head and Coordinator.


Assists Dean and Coordinator in running residential operations and managing student staff. Supervises RAs and JCs; meets with them biweekly and communicates campus-wide and residential life issues.


Provides support for the Faculty Head and Commons Council by attending meetings, planning leadership training and overseeing event planning. Coordinates aspects of Commons programs and attends Commons events.


Works with Dean, Faculty Head and Coordinator on projects including a newsletter, fire safety inspection and programs, holiday housing and Room Draw.


Develops student governance within Commons and supports leadership development.


Counsels students with roommate conflicts; helps resolve conflicts.


Provides academic support through tutoring, course warning advising and other academic advising as assigned by the Commons Dean.


Promotes a sense of community in residence halls of a Commons by interacting with students and organizing and planning events with residents.


Works to prevent damage in residence halls, investigates damage and assists in resolution of incidents related to damage.


Assists in enforcement of College policy, including alcohol policy; follows up on violations of College policy.


Conducts and oversees check in and out of rooms within Commons.


Plans wellness programs for residents within Commons.


Follows up on problem situations with students and administrators; provides support for Dean-on-Call.


Assists in crisis management.


Maintains communication with Public Safety, Facilities Management, Custodial, Counseling and Health Education, Health Center and all departments concerned with Residential Life.


Advises and counsels students within the limits of training and capabilities on social and academic matters and makes referrals when necessary.


Serves as advisor for Commons Council.

Education & Training

Middlebury Bachelor's degree preffered. Residential Life leadership experience is helpful, but not required.

Experience

Previous experience in residential life area helpful.

Knowledge

Familiarity with Middlebury College.

Other

Strong interpersonal, communication, and couseling skills. Ability to work with people necessary. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
