Health Professions advising:
*Serves as principal adviser to students seeking admission to medical, dental, veterinary, and related schools.
*Serves as co-chair of the Health Professions Committee, overseeing committee interviews and the process of ranking candidates.
*Writes the letter of recommendation on behalf of the Committee for each applicant to medical, dental, or veterinary school, incorporating a composite summary of the Committee's honest judgment and ranking while simultaneously presenting the candidate in the best possible light.
*Oversees, advises upon, and critiques the preparation of essays, dossiers, and related materials required for medical, dental, or veterinary school applications.
*Serves as faculty sponsor for Winter term premed internships, determining requirements and evaluating student performance.
*Establishes and cultivates collaborative relationships with admissions deans and directors of medical schools and with health professions advisers at other colleges, and participates in related national conferences, furthering support for our applicants to professional schools.
*Organizes and presents informational sessions, and oversees preparation of advising handbooks, guides, and other materials for faculty advisers and prospective students.
*Undertakes continuing education activities to keep abreast of developments in medical education and in health-related fields.
*Coordinates the interface between the PRIHECA program and Health Professions programs.
*Serves as adviser to the premedical and preveterinary student organizations.
Scholarship and fellowship administration:
*Serves as principal adviser to students seeking Rhodes, Marshall, Gates, and other British scholarships; and Beinecke, Goldwater, Mellon, and Watson fellowships and scholarships.
*Advises students and works with faculty advisers in other scholarship programs, including Truman, Fulbright, Keasbey, and Udall.
*Enhances the production of successful candidates by soliciting and encouraging participation by students who meet the applicant profiles; guiding the development of applicant portfolios; and arranging and conducting mock interviews and other practice sessions.
*Chairs or participates as a member of the various scholarship/fellowship selection committees.
*Organizes selection and mock-interview committees, soliciting participation by appropriate faculty members and outside professionals, and orienting committee members to the scholarship programs, selection criteria, and interview procedures.
*Evaluates and critiques essays of scholarship applicants, referring students to faculty or other professionals, as appropriate.
*Writes institutional endorsement letters for Beinecke, British Marshall, and other competitions where such letters are required, and works with faculty on composing individual letters of recommendation.
*Establishes and cultivates collaborative relationships with foundations, granting agencies, faculty, and other professionals, and participates in related conferences and symposia, enhancing our ability to match candidates with the applicant profiles of the various scholarship and fellowship programs.
*Organizes and presents informational sessions, and oversees dissemination of scholarship information and materials.
*Develops, researches, and publicizes new or enhanced scholarship opportunities.
*Develops and maintains ties with scholarship winners, organizing lectures and presentations by scholarship alumni for current students.
*Hosts visits by foundation directors and representatives of granting agencies.
*Serves as the public face of the fellowship and scholarship programs at Middlebury, making presentations at other institutions, and disseminating the results of scholarship competitions to the College community.
General:
*Oversees operation of the Fellowships and Health Professions Office, establishing policies and goals; setting priorities; supervising staff; fostering staff development and enhancements to services; and ensuring the performance of necessary support functions.
*Ensures that necessary records and databases are maintained on student placement and the results of scholarship competitions.
*Writes letters of recommendation for alumni.
*Oversees operation of program-related web sites.
*Administers the program budgets.
Performs other duties required by the Dean of Faculty or President.
