Primary Purpose

The Class Notes Editor will work to strengthen the bond between the institution and the alumni through well written and interesting class notes and related material in Middlebury Magazine; to collaborate with Magazine editor and communications staff to envision and develop the Magazine.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

As Class Notes Editor:

  • *Manages incoming news of alumni (undergraduate and Language Schools); collects and compiles news from multiple sources; suggests stories for front-of-the-book and feature well.
  • *Writes, and edits approximately 75 columns (1928-2006) in Word, maintaining high degree of accuracy while honoring secretarial voices.
  • *Formats copy into Quark; coordinates proofreading; makes corrections in Quark.
  • *Manages volunteer program, consisting of approximately 150 class secretaries; recruits new secretaries and develops training material; runs workshop for class secretaries at Alumni Leadership Conference.
  • Communicates regularly with secretaries via mail, email, and telephone.
  • *Stewards relationship with class secretaries by extending appreciation for their volunteer work and facilitating their role as ambassadors of the College.
  • *Manages obituary process (notifies department of deaths; acquires obituaries; generates addresses for sympathy letters to next of kin; notifies class secretaries; writes obituaries; proofs).
  • *Manages incoming wedding photograph process (acquires, labels, organizes electronic photos, writes captions, prioritizes photos by wedding date); manages non-wedding photographs.
  • *Writes sidebar alumni profiles and extended obituaries.
  • *Informs alumni records of changed constituent data. 
  • *Assists in copyediting and proofreading all copy for the Magazine, as well as other College publications.
  • *Supervises student assistants when required.
  • *Supervises timely updating of class notes copy on www.middleburymagazine.org.
  • *Collaborates with Magazine Editor in conception and re-launch of www.middleburymagazine.org.
  • *Manages the selection of the annual Jean Seeler "60 Class Secretary Award.
  • *Participates fully in the operation of a dynamic communications team/office, with inherent activities including brainstorming sessions, planning and organizational meetings, and other creative exercises. 
  • *Other duties as assigned. Reports, writes, and edits other sections of the Magazine, including front of the book and feature well.

Education & Training

Bachelor's degree in English or related field. Master's degree preferred.

Experience

Experience in publishing/journalism required.

Knowledge

Good writing, editing, and copyediting skills mandatory. Deadline driven. Computer literacy.
