Primary Purpose

The Designer is responsible for conceptualization and design of a wide range of communications, both print and interactive, to support the College's fund-raising, alumni, and other key objectives.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

  • Collaborates with communications director, art director, interactive director, writers, and clients to conceptualize projects and create design solutions. These could include print publications, collateral materials, advertisements, multimedia interfaces, Flash and Web graphics, and Web site development.
  • Serves as a resource for colleagues in development and alumni relations, helping them achieve their goals by providing graphic arts expertise and high-quality, compelling, and customized visuals.
  • Collaborates with art director and production coordinator to set up photo shoots and provides art direction for shoots where appropriate.
  • Works closely with and takes direction from the art director.
  • Stays current with trends in design of communications for development and alumni relations and recommends new directions as appropriate.
  • Works with production coordinator and vendors to obtain bids for printing and assists in other areas of production process as needed.
  • Oversees pre-press production and attends press checks for projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to assist the department.

Education & Training

Bachelor's degree in graphic design or related field or comparable professional experience.

Experience

1-3 years of professional design experience.

Knowledge

Knowledge Proficiency with design and photo-manipulation software (including Quark, InDesign, Photoshop, PowerPoint, and Freehand or Illustrator). Knowledge of design standards and trends in online and print communications. Knowledge of Web site development preferred.

Strong communications and organizational skills and proven collaborative abilities in working with staff, clients, and vendors. Attention to detail. Ability to recognize and respect confidential issues. Ability to work on multiple projects with different deadlines at one time. Must be flexible and a strong team member, as well as possess the ability to work independently.
