Primary Purpose

Works in collaboration with the Dean of Environmental Affairs to develop and sustain the growth of the College’s strategic environmental vision. Oversees and manages operations of Middlebury’s environmental programs, Hillcrest Environmental Center, optimizing fundraising, programmatic and co-curricular opportunities.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

College Advancement/Fundraising/Grants Management

  • Support fundraising efforts of Dean by working with College Advancement (CA) to optimize environmentally-related fundraising opportunities.
  • Act as liaison between CA and Environmental Affairs (EA) for all activities involved in soliciting gifts, cultivating and stewarding donors related to sustainability and the environmental programs at Middlebury.
  • Prepare information for donor visits by Dean.
  • Research environmental grant opportunities.
  • Manage EA side of environmental donor events.
  • Monitor expenditures of ES/EA grants and prepare reports.

Alumni Relations

  • Act as point person responding to inquiries of alumni interested in the environment insuring interaction with the Office of Alumni Affairs.
  • Communicate Dean’s environmentally-related alumni events/communications agenda to alumni affairs and track progress of implemented ideas.
  • Develop network for ES and other alumni involved in environmental and sustainability pursuits.
  • Partner with alumni affairs office to develop and host on and off-campus environmental alumni events, panels, receptions, etc.
  • Represent the College on behalf of Environmental Affairs at alumni events and professional conferences to augment availability of the Dean.

Programs and Hillcrest Environmental Center Operations

  • Oversight of all Hillcrest Environmental Center operations acting as primary contact for building management issues.
  • Manage Dean of Environmental Affairs Office operations.
  • Manage EA operating budget, all endowments, grants and gift accounts, tracking expenditures, writing and submitting reports.
  • Provide input on performance and employment issues for Academic Department Coordinator/Environmental Affairs Assistant, provide day to day supervision and scheduling.
  • Hire, train and supervise student employees.

Communications

  • Ensure that Environmental Affairs public relations pieces reflect current information (website, fact sheets, articles).
  • Work with Dean to develop and implement strategic plan for environmental affairs communications.
  • Liaison with communications and public affairs to ensure Middlebury is represented as a leader in sustainability and the environment and to maximize educational opportunities.
  • Coordinate and manage communications and public affairs opportunities for ES &ES with internal and external contacts.
  • Create annual Environmental Affairs year-end report.

Events

  • Supervise calendar of environmental events and activities.
  • Manage operations of environmental events: annual retreat, weekly colloquium series, annual distinguished Margolin lecture, donor events.

Career Services Office

  • Increase collaboration with CSO to maximize opportunities for environmental internships and job opportunities, career conversations and other events.

Education & Training

Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience

At least five years previous experience in higher education administration and knowledge of environmental issues. High degree of computer literacy.

Other

Strong interpersonal and communication skills necessary. Must be able to work with various constituencies, both internal and external to the College. Excellent written, organizational, administrative and research skills required. Proven ability to motivate and direct staff and student interns as appropriate. Willingness to travel and handle confidential information with appropriate discretion.
