Primary Purpose

Improves, maintains and cares for campus grounds (lawns, trees, flowers and shrubs).

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Supervises full-time and seasonal grounds workers and recommends staffing needs.


Assigns work, trains employees and monitors work performance.


Installs plantings on new construction areas based on approved plans and renovates existing plantings.


Sets up grounds for commencement and other major College events.


Assists in equipment repairs.


*Removes litter and debris from campus grounds.


*Prepares topsoil, seeds, waters, fertilizes areas for new grasses.


*Aerates, overseeds, weeds, fertilizes, mows, rakes and maintains turf areas.


*Plants, waters, weeds, prunes and mulches flower beds and shrub and tree beds.


Assists in snow removal from steps, roads and walkways.


Assists General Services and Recycling work areas.


Aides in design work for new plantings and renovations.


Cooperates with other departmental personnel in completing assigned tasks as either a project leader or as a member of a team.


*Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established departmental and College policies and procedures.


Performs associated facilities service work as requested, including but not limited to plumbing, electrical, carpentry and painting.

Education & Training

High school education or vocational school equivalent.  Training in horticulture preferred.  Equipment training.

Experience

3-5 years of experience in horticulture or related field.  Supervisory experience beneficial.

Knowledge

Must have knowledge of horticulture, landscape techniques and soil requirements for various plantings.

Other

Pesticide applicator's license or ability to obtain.  Valid driver's license and CDL or ability to obtain.  Strong interpersonal skills.  Must be able to lift 10-30 lbs. frequently each day and up to 100 lbs. occasionally.  Must be able to push and pull up to 150 lbs. frequently.  Ability to work Saturdays and Sundays as part of a regular or rotating work shift.  Must be available to work flexible shifts and overtime if necessary.  VT certified Horticulturist or the ability to obtain within a year.
