Primary Purpose

The Associate Vice President will be responsible for all Facilities Planning and Management activities on the Middlebury College campus. He/she will also function as the Chief Facilities Planner for Middlebury College.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

Facilities Planning


*Supervise professional Facilities Planning staff.


*Develop facilities programs including: Requests for Qualifications and Requests for Proposals to architects, construction managers, contractors, and other professionals as part of the process of hiring professional services; manage the design process for all facilities projects.


*Oversee all construction activity on the campus; coordinate all design and construction activity with effected administrative, faculty, student, and staff organizations.


*Report to administrative and Trustee committees on all prospective and active facilities design and construction projects.


*Develop and monitor the budget for all Capital Building Projects.


*Maintain the Middlebury Campus Master Plan.


*Develop a ten year Deferred Maintenance, Facility Renewal, and Adaptation Plan; maintain the Middlebury College Facilities Condition Analysis and Replacement Cost Report.


*Develop and maintain relationships with the Town of Middlebury Building Inspectors Office, the Planning Board, the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Conservation Committee, the State of Vermont Historical Commission, and other committees and boards responsible for permitting facilities on the Middlebury College Campus.


Facilities Management


* Provide direct supervision to the Director of Facilities Services.


*Develop and monitor the budget required to maintain and operate the campus of 925 acres, and 128 buildings totaling 2,272,000 square feet.


*Accountable for operations that include a staff of 150, with 27 supervisors and a Director of Facilities Services and physical plant which includes a central chilling plant and a central boiler plant. The department is responsible for maintaining and operating all campus facilities including the campus utilities infrastructure, all campus buildings including student housing and athletic facilities, the summer facilities for the Bread Loaf Campus and extensive athletics facilities.


*Performs other duties as assigned to assist the College in obtaining and maintaining its mission.

Education & Training

Bachelor's degree in architecture or engineering required.  Master's or doctoral degree in architecture, engineering or business administration preferred.

Experience

A minimum of 10 years of previous experience, with at least five years of managerial experience in campus planning, programming, construction, and maintenance required.

Knowledge

General knowledge of  applicable Building and Fire Codes; ability to obtain Vermont Registration as a Professional Engineer or Licensed Architect is preferable; ability to direct and converse technically with engineers and architects regarding campus utility systems for electricity, steam, water, sewer, network cabling, and the maintenance, operation, design and construction of the various building types and fields which occur on a residential college campus.
