Primary Purpose

Coordinates and supervises general carpentry, painting and door/lock related maintenance and repairs for all campus buildings, facilities and equipment.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Generates and receives carpentry, painting, door and lock work orders from the work control expediter; schedules work assignments, monitors progress and quality of work.


*Evaluates work projects.


*Determines and coordinates staffing requirements.


Maintains records of completed work.


*Administers safe operating practices/procedures and maintains a safe and efficient working environment.


*Assists in the hiring and evaluation of personnel.


*Trains personnel and approves time off, monitors work performance, resolves employee issues and keeps morale high.


*Coordinates work schedule with supervisors of other maintenance trade groups and outside contractors.


*Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established Middlebury College and departmental policies and procedures.


Inspects, monitors and supervises contractor work performance.


*Ensures timely completion of jobs and smooth departmental operations.


*Functions as a working supervisor.


*Orders equipment and supplies as necessary.


*Performs associated Facilities Services maintenance work as requested, including, but not limited to: snow removal, event set-up and clean-up, truck loading/unloading and grounds maintenance.


Coordinates/manages multiple trade renovation projects.

Education & Training

High school diploma, vocational training or equivalent required.

Experience

5 years of carpentry and painting experience required.

Knowledge

Must be skilled in the use of various hand and power tools and their maintenance.  Knowledge of carpentry methods and mathematics necessary.  Knowledge of paint types and paint mixing helpful.

Other

Must have driver's license and own vehicle for transportation of self, materials and procuring small materials.  Good interpersonal skills.  Must furnish own hand tools for carpentry and painting work.  Must be available for emergency maintenance calls on evenings and weekends.  Must be available for flexible shifts and overtime as required.  Must be able to lift 10-25 lbs. frequently each day and up to 75 lbs. occasionally.  Must be able to push and pull up to 100 lbs. frequently.  Requires long periods of time standing.  Also requires frequent bending, twisting, crouching and reaching overhead.  May require some overtime.
