Primary Purpose

Provides basic carpentry services to build, repair, rebuild, remodel and maintain campus buildings, facilities and equipment.  Assists supervisor with management and coordination of carpentry work responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Assists supervisor with planning, staffing and scheduling of carpentry work. 


Receives work assignments, plans and lays out work. 


*Procures materials, tools and equipment. 
Works as scheduled, maintains records of completed work. 


*Repairs broken windows and screens, installs screens and new window units, etc. 


*Builds tables, counters, cabinets and shelves as necessary. 


*Rebuilds and/or repairs furniture as necessary. 


*Repairs and installs doors, flooring, ceilings, walls and windows as requested.   


*Builds and/or remodels various units such as kitchens, offices, etc. 


*Erects and dismantles various campus structures for special events such as hockey rink, stages, commencement platform, etc. 


*Completes supervisory responsibilities during supervisor's absence. 


*Assists supervisor with bi-annual carpenter evaluations. 


Trains new carpentry employees.   


*Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established Middlebury College and departmental policies and procedures.


Assists supervisor with resolution of carpenter employee issues. 


Performs associated Facilities Services maintenance work as requested, including, but not limited to:snow removal, event set-up and clean-up, truck loading and unloading and grounds maintenance.

Education & Training

High school diploma with carpentry/vocational training required.

Experience

Previous carpentry, cabinet making/millwork experience necessary.

Knowledge

Must be skilled in the use of various hand and power tools.  Knowledge of carpentry methods and mathematics necessary.

Other

Must provide own vehicle for transportation of self, tools and  procuring small materials.  Driver's license.  Furnishes hand tools for carpentry work.  Must be available for flexible shifts and over-time as required.  Must be able to lift 10-25 lbs. numerous times each day and up to 75 lbs. a few times each day.  Must be able to push and pull up to 100 lbs. frequently.  Requires long periods of time standing.  Also requires frequent bending, twisting, crouching and reaching overhead
