Primary Purpose

Performs excavation and earth work service for underground utilities, general site work and landscaping.  During winter months provide  service to other Facilities Services trade areas.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Operates front-end loader/backhoe, excavator, bull-dozer, landscape tractor, road grader, jack-hammer, soil tamping equipment, transit, metal detector-locator and associated motorized power and hand tools necessary to complete the following. 


*Supervises and completes underground utility systems repair and installation to include: steam, water, sewage, electric, fiber optic and telephone. 


*Assists trade personnel with repair and installation of underground utility systems. 


*Performs site work associated with landscaping  projects to include:  rough and finish grading, seeding, planting and mulching. 


*Replaces/installs concrete sidewalks and curbs. 


*Completes minor asphalt repairs and prepares larger areas for asphalt  contractors. 


Cleans and repairs as required storm drains, manholes and catch basins. 


Performs annual fire hydrant maintenance, testing and inspections. 


*Supervises seasonal staff, assists Supervisor with hiring and evaluation of seasonal staff. 


*Assigns work, trains and monitors performance. 


*Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established Middlebury College and departmental policies and procedures.


Performs associated Facilities Services Department service work as requested 


and during winter months including, but not limited to: snow removal, event set-up and clean-up and related trade's work.

Education & Training

High school diploma or equivalent and/or vocational school.

Experience

5 years of excavation related experience to include backhoe,  bulldozer, dump truck and associated equipment operation and maintenance.

Knowledge

Knowledge of safe equipment operation and maintenance, safe working and lifting practices and procedures, concrete form construction and associated concrete work, metal working and welding.

Other

Commercial Driver's License.  Good interpersonal, organizational, and supervisory skills.  Must be available for emergency and scheduled work during evenings or weekends, and flexible shifts and overtime as required.  Must provide own vehicle for transportation of self, tools and procuring small materials as required.  Furnishes small hand tools as required.  Ability to work Saturdays and Sundays as part of a regular or rotating work shift.  Must be available to work flexible shifts and overtime if necessary. Must be able to lift 10-30 lbs. frequently each day and up to 150 lbs. at least once a day.  Must be able to push and pull up to 200 lbs. frequently.  Requires frequent walking and long periods of time standing.  Also requires frequent bending, kneeling, crouching and reaching.
