Primary Purpose

Supervises the building and grounds maintenance staff of the Bread Loaf campus and manages the routine maintenance of the facility.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

  • Manages employment process of the Bread Loaf grounds team, including completing request for personnel, interviewing, selection, supervision of assigned staff, conducting performance reviews, providing training and timekeeping approval.
  • Counsels staff and handles disciplinary problems with some assistance from the Bread Loaf Manager.
  • Assures that staff is properly equipped and the equipment is maintained in proper working order.
  • Procures local purchase items, orders materials and recommends equipment needs for budgeting purposes.
  • Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established departmental practices and procedures and ensures employees do the same.
  • Assigns work, trains employees and monitors work performance.
  • Develops work schedules to coincide with appropriate dates for ground preparation, planting, mowing, pruning, construction, painting, etc., and manages or instructs staff engaged in these activities.
  • Receives and prepares work assignments, plans and lays out work.  Procures materials, tools and equipment.  Maintains records of completed work.
  • Repairs and installs doors, flooring, ceilings, walls, screens, windows, etc.
  • Performs painting, taping, plastering, sanding, and varnishing on interior and exterior of buildings, facilities and equipment, floors, furniture and doors as required.
  • Cleans shop, tools, and equipment daily at the end of the work shift.
  • Troubleshoot plumbing, electrical, and heating problems.
  • Performs associated facilities services maintenance work as requested including, but not limited to: snow removal, event set-up and clean-up, truck loading and unloading, grounds maintenance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to assist the department in obtaining and maintaining its mission.

Education & Training

High school diploma with carpentry/vocational training required.

Must have, or the ability to obtain, a Class 1B Water System Operator license from the State of Vermont.

Experience

3-5 years of experience in both landscape and carpentry-related fields.

Supervisory experience beneficial.

Knowledge

Ability to plan and direct the activities of fellow employees working on assignments.  Thorough knowledge of prinicples and methods for building and landscape maintenance.  Considerable knowledge of proper use of power tools, landscape equipment, and hand tools.  Working knowledge of heating, electrical and plumbing systems.  Ability to perform various carpentry assignments including framing, plaster and sheetrock repairs, trim installation, painting, etc.  Ability to plant, transplant and prune shrubs, flowers, and trees.

Other

Must provide own vehicle for transportation of self, tools and for procuring small materials.  Must have a valid driver's license.  Furnish hand tools for carpentry and plumbing work.  Have ability to work with other maintenance trades.  Good interpersonal and organizational skills.  Must be able to work flexible daily and weekly shifts including some evening and/or weekend assignments.  Must be able to lift 10-25 lbs. frequently during the day and up to 50 lbs. a few times each day.  Must be able to push and pull up to 100 lbs. frequently.  Requires frequent walking and long periods of time standing.  Involves frequent bending, twisting, crouching and reaching.
