Primary Purpose

Development, implementation and evaluation of a broad-based Health and Wellness Education program promoting wellness with a focus on Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Education.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

  1. Develop, coordinate, promote and deliver student-oriented campus-wide prevention and educational programs in the areas of:
    1. health maintenance and wellness,
    2. building and maintaining self-esteem
    3. alcohol and other drug use,
    4. AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases,
    5. stress management
    6. sexual harassment and assault,
    7. contraception,
    8. eating disorders,
    9. tobacco prevention and cessation, and
    10. sexuality.

2. Organize, train and supervise a network of Student Health Peer Educators, who present programs in the residences throughout the academic year in cooperation with the other departments on campus (i.e., Commons, Social Houses, Athletics, Counseling and Human Relations, Chellis House, etc.).

  1. Analyze the climate of health and wellness needs by choosing or developing survey instruments, overseeing the survey process and evaluating results; develop programming to meet the needs as determined by campus-wide student surveys.
  2. Maintain and oversee the Department of Health and Wellness Education budget.
  3. Develop and maintain the Department of Health and Wellness Education website.
  4. Define and integrate existing health and wellness programming efforts into a cohesive four-year curriculum.
  5. Provide introductory Health and Wellness Education with a focus on AOD at September and February first-year student orientations. Continue programming throughout the first-year student experience.
  6. Participate in organizing and evaluating pre-matriculation AOD programming through use of on-line resources such as myStudentBody.com.
  7. Work closely with Health Center administration in compiling and maintaining alcohol use statistics.
  8. Represent Health and Wellness Education in the Dean of Student Affairs division meetings.
  9. Maintain and develop skills via participation in continuing education opportunities, membership in the NEHEN (New England Health Educators Network), and periodically attending NECHA (New England College Health Association) annual meetings.
  10. Develop and maintain professional relationships with counterparts at peer institutions.
  11. Be a visible member of the College community by joining committees, attending meetings and events, and establishing relationships with students.
  12. Provide students with resource information by providing, for example, printed materials, articles for The Campus newspaper, newsletters, posters, bulletin boards, etc.
  13. Collaborate with other campus departments to organize special events and presentations by visiting speakers/experts.
  14. Distribute written health education prevention materials and brochures required for College compliance with Drug Free Schools and Campus Act, and other state and federal laws as they relate to the student population.
  15. Coordinate and write the Drug Free Schools biennial review for the Student Affairs division.
  16. Prepare and write the Department of Health and Wellness Education annual report.
  17. Prepare and apply for health education grants as appropriate.
  18. Work cooperatively with others and accept direction from supervisors.
  19. Handle confidential issues with appropriate discretion.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education & Training

  1. Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred, in health promotion/education or related discipline.
  2. Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or willingness to pursue such certification.

Experience

  1. Would prefer at least 4 years of experience as a health educator.
  2. Experience in an academic and/or clinical setting.
  3. Demonstrated experience developing/initiating new programs
  4. Workshop facilitation and group presentation skills, preferably with a college-aged population.
  5. Grant writing experience.
  6. Computer literacy: Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint. Familiarity with Banner also preferred.

  7. Expertise in drug and alcohol issues and prevention needs for college age adults.
  8. Demonstrated initiative, creativity, evaluative skills, independence, and ability to work with focus groups.
