Primary Purpose

Evaluates and treats students with a wide range of health problems and provides health maintenance services.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.


    Evaluates and treats students with a wide range of health problems, including but not limited to: respiratory illness, musculoskeketal injury, gastrointestinal disorders, dermatological conditions, mental health issues and a variety of infections and systemic illnesses.
    Provides primary care, such as routine physicals for students in study abroad programs, annual women's health exams and ongoing education related to prevention of illness and promotion of health.
    Provides contraceptive education, dispenses/prescribes contraceptives and troubleshoots difficulties with birth control methods.
    Evaluates and treats students in emergencies in the absence of  physician.
    Dispenses and prescribes medications and assists students if difficulties with medication arise.
    Orders lab work, reviews results and devises a treatment plan based on the results.
    Performs a variety of on-site lab tests.
    Orders x-rays, reviews results and devises a treatment plan based on the results.
    Consults and collaborates with the College physician, Training Room staff, Commons deans, Counseling staff, and students' home providers, when appropriate.
    Provides information and consults with parents when needed.
    Documents and updates information in students' health records.
    Admits students to the health center as inpatients when their condition warrants, evaluates/directs their care, discharges them when appropriate.
    Refers students to on-campus and Middlebury area resources when needed.
    Provides ongoing supervision for the nursing staff including during the early evening and weekend hours via telephone when needed.
    Develops and revises nursing protocols as needed.
    Participates in periodic health center and campus-wide meetings.
  • Presents health related information to campus groups when requested. 

Education & Training


    MS degree in nursing with adult or family nurse practitioner specialty.
    Licensure:  Advanced practice nurse in the state of Vermont. 
  • Certification:  National Certification maintained through ongoing continuing education.

Experience

6-10 years of experience is preferable.

Other

CPR certification. DEA registration. Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
