Primary Purpose

Responsible for leadership of the Parton Health Center.   Also provides direct medical care to the students of the College and act as the team physician.  Determines medical policy, protocols, and best practices to ensure a high standard of safety for students and medical staff.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

Provide direct patient care to all Middlebury College students at the main campus and the Breadloaf campus, including summer program students.

Has overall responsibility for supervision of all health center staff to ensure delivery of appropriate and safe health care services to students, including: employment of staff; evaluation of performance, staff coordination and workflow; clinical effectiveness and safety.

Oversees the health center budget.

Directly supervise the Associate Director of Health Services ,  Nurse Practitioners, and the Director of Health and Wellness Education.

Work in collaboration with the Director of Sports Medicine to ensure appropriate and safe care for student athletes.

Final authority for medical matters including medical protocols and policy; standards by which clinical staff provide treatment to patients; practice procedures and standards.  Provides medical oversight and supervision for all medical / clinical staff.  Educates staff on medical issues as needed.

Responsible for health center operations, working in collaboration with the Associate Director.  With the Associate Director, form the management team for the student health center.

Final authority for medical decisions in the Department of Sports Medicine.  In collaboration with the Director, form the management team for the sports medicine / training room.

Responsible for communication with parents and families regarding the health care provided to their student, as appropriate.

Evaluate and update health center medical protocols to meet current standard of care, including periodic review of nurse standing orders and nurse practitioner guidelines.

Provides home athletic event coverage for designated varsity college teams.

Coordinates care of students and exchange of information between Parton health center, Sports Medicine, Counseling Services, Porter hospital, SCAC, outside providers, local and national public health organizations.

Collaborates with Associate Director of the health center and Director of Sports Medicine to ensure timely delivery of high-quality health care.

Collaborates with the Deans on cases involving student medical situations as needed.

Collaborates with the Athletic Director to ensure safe athletic participation for all students.

Provides oversight for the automated external defibrillator program in accordance with local and national laws.

With the Dean of Student Affairs, serve as spokesperson for the college in matters related to student health.

Participates in college committees as appropriate (e.g. Chair,  pandemic flu preparedness; member, student affairs alcohol task force)

Provides the Dean of Student Affairs with regular updates and with annual report.

Attends local specialty group and Porter Hospital staff meetings per local standards.

Maintain physician's license, DEA, speciality membership, and admitting privileges at Porter hospital. 

Models appropriate conduct related to treatment and respect for patients.

Education & Training

Licensed physician with Board Certification in Family Practice, Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine.

Current privileges or ability to obtain privileges at Porter hospital.



Experience

Fellowship in primary care or sports medicine, certificate of additional qualification in sports medicine, or extensive experience in sports medicine and the position of team physician.

Knowledge

Effective leadership, management and communication skills.

The ability to motivate and develop teamwork and effective work relationships among staff.
