Primary Purpose

The Manager of Employee Relations is responsible for providing leadership to the team of Generalists in delivering a full range of Human Resources (HR) services to designated College departments. Partners with management teams in designated areas to target HR services to aid in accomplishing operational goals. Partners with and provides direct support to faculty and staff with matters related to employment.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies and develops best practices in area of employee relations.
  • In conjunction with HR managers, develops HR strategies & programs. Conducts strategic planning for implementation of programmatic initiatives.
  • Defines HR services for constituents and ensures delivery via the HR Generalist team.
  • Provides direct HR support to customers.
  • Functions as HR consultant to management teams.
  • Provides coaching and professional development to staff and supervisors.
  • Provides support to management in matters related to staffing (including optimal organizational structure, job description development, and work-flow analysis and improvement); recruitment and selection; performance management; employee relations; and compensation and benefits.
  • Develops employment policy and ensures consistent application and compliance.
  • Provides communication and training for new policies and on-going compliance.
  • Serves as the liaison for Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Disability, and Worker’s Compensation programs.
  • Provides explanation and interpretation of Middlebury College policies and procedures and state and federal employment laws as they apply to the College. Ensures compliance.
  • Facilitates mediation for conflict management and problem-solving dialogues.
  • Partners with Training Manager to determine staff development programming needs. Assists in program development and delivery.
  • Ensures performance evaluations conducted in a timely manner. Coordinates the performance evaluation process with the administration of the College’s wage and salary program.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned to assist the department in achieving and maintaining its mission.

Education & Training

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred. SPHR strongly recommended.

Experience

8 - 10 years experience as a Human Resources Generalist. Management experience preferred.

Knowledge

Knowledge of state and federal employment laws. Computer proficiency necessary.

Must handle confidential information in a discreet manner. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
