General
- In conjunction with the other HR Management Team members and the AVP of Human Resources/Organization Development provides strategic leadership regarding broad HR topics and direction and services.
- Directly manages benefits and compensation staff to ensure that outstanding service is provided to employees and that all plans and programs are administered in a compliant and fiscally responsible manner.
- Develops techniques for compiling, preparing and presenting data including monthly metrics reports and meaningful compensation and benefits planning and reporting tools for both the department and senior management.
- Manages relationships, in a fiscally responsible manner, with outside attorneys, actuaries, brokers, and consultants, to support the legal and competitive status of the benefits and compensation programs.
- Plans and develops communication pieces such as letters, mass mailings, employee and/or supervisor newsletter articles, e-mails, web postings, brochures, in-person presentations, etc. designed to effectively and consistently communicate both technical and programmatic details, as well as the value of, the benefits and compensation programs.
Compensation
- Oversees and manages the College’s wage and salary program. Monitors the effectiveness of existing compensation policies, guidelines and procedures and recommends revisions as well as new plans which are cost effective and consistent with compensation trends and institutional objectives.
- Oversees the salary increase process for staff to ensure sound fiscal allocation of resources.
- Supervises participation in various salary surveys to assess the College’s, and the Institute’s, status relative to the stated compensation objectives.
- Ensures that compensation-related policies and pay practices are legally compliant.
- Leads the Staff Compensation Committee in its review and oversight of the College’s compensation program.
- Provides consultation, analysis and modeling on annual wage and salary budgets.
Benefits
- Oversees and manages the retirement and health & welfare benefit plans (medical, dental, life insurances, disability plans, FSAs, EFAPs, etc.) for Middlebury College and its constituencies.
- Prepares fiscal year benefits budget for approval by the VP Finance/Chief Financial Officer. Monitors budget on an on-going basis and takes remedial action as needed.
- Evaluates and compares the College’s existing benefits with those of other employers by analyzing other plans, surveys and other sources of information. Develops specifications for new or existing plans to maintain the institution’s competitive position and to obtain a uniform benefit package for College employees. Prepares and presents recommendations to President’s Staff as necessary.
- Supervises participation in various benefits surveys to ensure the institutes’ benefits objectives are achieved.
- Leads the Benefits Advisory Committee in reviewing and advising on the College’s benefit programs.
