Primary Purpose

The Binding and Conservation Technician works within the LIS Preservation & Processing Workgroup to maintain the physical condition of the libraries paper based circulating and special collections. She/he selects and evaluates individual items in the circulating collections for preservation treatments. She/he prepares shipments to the commercial binder. She/he performs conservation quality treatments on specifically identified special collections materials. She/he performs preservation treatments on circulating materials. Approximately: 35% of her/his time is spent preparing items for shipment to the commercial binder, 35% of her/his time is spent conserving special collections materials, and 30% of her/his time is spent repairing items in the circulating collections.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Works as a member of the Preservation & Processing Workgroup to facilitate access to the libraries collections.
  • Processes materials for shipment to commercial binder: makes appropriate treatment decisions; collates materials; prepares electronic files and transmits them to binder; receives and reviews returned items for quality control.
  • Performs conservation treatment on selected special collections materials identified by Special Collections staff: conserves paper, paperbound books and pamphlets, and cloth-bound books using state of the art conservation materials and techniques.
  • Performs preservation treatment on non-archival materials: reviews damaged books for appropriate treatment; completes in-house repairs (recases text blocks, replaces spines and endpapers, photocopies and tips-in replacement pages); repairs paper on maps.
  • Reinforces and treats new materials: binds pamphlets; constructs pockets; tips-in errata; etc.
  • Creates new item records and processes new materials.
  • Completes associated projects as assigned by supervisor.

Education & Training

Advanced training in book repair and conservation, either by coursework or apprenticeship.

Experience


2-4 years experience working with paper based collections in a library or museum setting. Computer skills and comfort level with databases. Prior experience with integrated library system helpful.

Knowledge

Knowledge of online catalog system and preservation book repair/binding techniques preferred.

Other

Requires a high degree of manual dexterity, accuracy, neatness, efficiency, and patience with detailed work.
