Primary Purpose

The Preservation and Processing Manager serves, along with the Collections Management work group leaders, as part of a collaborative work team that is responsible for facilitating access to the collections of Library and Information Services in all of their forms. He contributes his individual skills and expertise to help the team achieve its objectives.  He is responsible for communicating openly with work group members as well as with other staff affected by the work of Collections Management; facilitates communication with staff under his supervision; raises key questions confronting Collections Management; engages the team in answering these questions.  Also serves as primary contact for issues concerning all LIS buildings and facilities.  Additionally, he encourages and participates in a dialogue with the user community in order to understand their expectations, needs and experiences.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.


    Works as a member of the Collections Management area to facilitate access to the library's collection in all of its forms.
    Provides support, direction, coaching and feedback to the staff responsible for the preservation and processing of materials.
    Sets and implements preservation policy to maintain the condition of the library's and branch libraries' physical collections (excluding Special Collections materials) according to preservation standards.
    Manages work group budget.
    Serves as client contact for the commercial binder.
  • Oversees buildings and facilities, including liaison work with Facilities Management and Facilities Planning for ongoing maintenance and renovations. Works with team of LIS staff to monitor our facilities and assess needs.

    With all Collections Managements work group leaders, and work group leaders from other LIS areas, as necessary
    With staff responsible for the preservation and processing of materials
    With other members of the Collection Management area
    With LIS staff, particularly those responsible for building management, including the Operations cluster, and the Information Desk.
  • With College Facilities Management, Facilities Planning, and Business Operations staff

Education & Training

Bachelor's degree or equivalent with broad liberal arts knowledge.

Experience

2-4 Years of experience in libraries with a focus on materials processing and preservation.  Computer skills and comfort level with databases.  Knowledge of cataloging, and the creation of metadata.

Knowledge

Knowledge of online catalog system, word processing, and preservation book repair techniques highly desirable.  Keyboarding skills required. Foreign language helpful.

Other

Requires strong organizational skills, high degree of manual dexterity, accuracy, neatness, efficiency, and patience with detailed work.
