Primary Purpose |

The Principal Cataloger serves, along with the other Collections Management workgroup leaders, as part of a collaborative team responsible for facilitating access to the collections of Library and Information Services. She contributes her individual skills and expertise to help the team achieve its objectives. She is responsible for communicating openly with area members as well as with other staff affected by the work of Collections Management; raises key questions confronting Collections Management; and engages the team in answering these questions. She is also expected to fulfill the other responsibilities of a librarian, e.g. teaching classes, taking reference desk shifts, and acting as a liaison. Additionally, she encourages and participates in dialogue with the user community in order to understand the expectations, needs and experiences of the user community.

Responsibilities |
Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.
Works as a member of the Collections Management area to facilitate access to the library's collection in all forms, with special attention to the creation of the virtual library and its collections. Provides support, direction, and feedback to the staff responsible for developing the metadata (cataloging) for materials in the collections of Library and Information Services. Develops policies relating to the creation and maintenance of the library's catalog.
- Leads and supervises the Original Cataloging work group.

Education & Training |
|
Masters in Library Science or an equivalent combination of degree and experience.
|
Experience |
|
4-8 years of experience in libraries with a focus on cataloging and the creation of metadata. Computer skills and comfort level with databases. Knowledge of various library cataloging and metadata formats and standards.

Remains informed about current methods, software and techniques of cataloging.
