Primary Purpose |
|
The Reference and Instruction Librarian for Government Information (including state and federal) will provide reference and instruction to faculty, students and staff. This support will include promoting the wide range of services offered by Library and Information Services, developing strong working relationships with faculty, and preparing for changes in the curriculum and teaching methods being used. The Reference and Instruction Librarian will utilize his/her expertise to develop appropriate documentation for the use of LIS resources, to teach research skills, to provide one-on-one research consultation, and to assist in the development of the Library collection.

Responsibilities |
Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.
- Serve as the primary Library and Information Services liaison to the faculty in assigned departments.
- Serve as a resource librarian and liaison for students and faculty in academic departments
- Develop strong working relationships with faculty in order to promote the wide range of services offered by LIS.
- Provide curricular resource development and selective dissemination of subject information
- Develop and teach classes for academic courses, including First Year Seminars, subject classes through senior theses seminars, and other library and research skills
- Create resource and instruction guides, selective bibliographies, and point of use aids
- Take primary responsibility for library collection development for academic subject areas
- Monitor collection development budget in assigned areas and approve appropriate purchase requests
- Conduct bibliographic consultations
- Teach the use of research sources
- Assist library users with specialized resources in all formats, including the public catalog, databases, and internet resources
- Develop and maintains selected library web pages providing information and instruction, particularly in liaison areas
- Maintain subject and technical expertise in a rapidly evolving field through ongoing education, professional development, and/or scholarly activity.
- Work cooperatively with others and accept direction from supervisors
- Work very closely with other LIS liaisons
- Work as a member of the Research and Instruction workgroup
- Provide Reference service at public service points
- Maintain current awareness of reference and research tools
- With others, work to accomplish the goals of Research & Instruction
- Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Training |

Requires a graduate degree in Library or Information Science and a strong background in at least one liberal arts academic subject.

Experience |
|
Two years of post-MLS experience in an academic library is preferred.

Excellent interpersonal skills, a positive attitude and enthusiasm for learning are essential. Technical skills and a willingness to develop new competencies are required. Ability to work in a team oriented environment is important.
