Primary Purpose


  • The Curator of Special Collections and Archives (CSCA) develops and refines the Special Collections mission, operational policies and procedures, and collection development policies, which include the Abernethy Collection of American Literature, the Helen Hartness Flanders Ballad Collection, the College Archives, Rare Books & Manuscripts, Media Archives, and Realia. The CSCA works with the Assistant Curator of Special Collections and Archives/Exhibits Designer (ACSCA/DE) in the conceptualization and realization of Special Collections mission statement and implementing Special Collections policies, procedures and administrative supervision.  The CSCA collaborates with the ACSCA/ED to provide access to and to organize, highlight, and preserve the unique, valuable and diverse non-circulating holdings of Middlebury College contained in all five components within Special Collections.  The CSCA develops an educational plan that reinforces the significance of primary source materials as a curricular resource and implements that plan through close association with faculty and through the Academic Liaison and First Year Seminar programs.  The CSCA develops an effective outreach program to solicit donations to the College Archives and other areas of Special Collections from College administration, faculty, emeriti, alumni, and other members of the College community.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

Primary Responsibilities:


Provides support, direction, coaching, and feedback to the staff responsible for assisting with the activities that support the development and refinement of the various collections of LIS.


Provides leadership, support, and direction to the digitization efforts of LIS.


Actively pursues important materials/resources that would enhance Middlebury College's academic and scholarly reputation.


Develops and supervises the overall service profile of Special Collections


Administers operational budgets for Special Collections, College Archives, Abernethy, and Flanders Collections, and the book budgets for the Abernethy Collection, College Archives, RBMS, and as liaison to other academic departments



    Administers the activities of the Friends of the Library, including annual membership campaign, recommendations for publication projects, special acquisitions with Friends funds, and planning the annual Ron Rucker Lecture
    In collaboration with faculty representative of the Department of American Literature & Civilization, invites and schedules for the Abernethy Lecture series
    Develops effective programming to promote the relevance of Special Collections and create enhanced awareness of LIS issues of importance to the College community
    Insures the proper storage, treatment, and preservation of the Special Collections.
    Organizes, describes, and classifies Abernethy Collection manuscripts, selected RBMS manuscript collections, and Archival record groups and series
    Develops and maintains finding aids, catalogs and inventories to facilitate access to the materials outlined above.
    Curates the College Archives
    Provides instruction to faculty, students, and independent researchers in primary source research methods and the proper handling of Special Collections materials in classroom environment and in individual consultations
    Serves as librarian liaison for academic departments/programs and participates in the First Year Seminar program with an emphasis on relating primary source research in Special Collections to those academic departments/programs and FYSE classes
    Provides general reference service as part of Reference schedule rotation
    Responds to all forms of communication, including walk-ins, regarding reference and research questions from College administration, faculty, students, and staff, independent scholars, and the general public
    Works with ASCSCA/ED in organizing and planning priorities of the College oral history program
    Works with ASCSCA/ED to design visually interesting and informative exhibits
    Collaborates with the ACSCA/ED on content of and designs for exhibit catalogs/brochures and other Special Collection's publications
  • Performs other duties as needed

Works closely with Special Collections staff, student workers, cataloging department, Preservation and Processing, LIS colleagues, faculty and college administration to coordinate the goals and objectives of Special Collections with the overall mission of Middlebury College

    Expanding and increasingly accessible collections of primary source materials that are responsibly preserved
    Permanent documentation of the College's history through the maintenance of the records of faculty, students, emeriti, alumni and staff
    Educated and satisfied users who are informed about the specialized nature of rare, non-circulating materials and knowledgeable of the College's collections
    Enhanced accessibility of the College's photographic collections
    An increased number of exhibits from more departments that are well researched, informative, beautifully presented and highlight the College's holdings
  • Consistent and systematic reduction of the backlog of archive materials 

 

Education & Training

A Master of Science in Library Science is required.  Graduate work in another subject discipline, preferably English & American Literature and/or History. Outstanding leadership, communications skills, and computer skills.  Essential to have a comfort level with databases and the creation of  digital resources.


In-depth knowledge of archival practices and subject expertise in literature and/or history.


Working knowledge of at least one foreign language highly desirable.

Experience

Seven-plus years of experience in special collections and/or archives in an institution of  higher education or research library, with a focus on resource development, reference, and a managerial responsibility, including budget supervision. Demonstrated public relations skills helpful.

Knowledge

Outstanding leadership, communications skills, and computer skills. 


Essential to have a comfort level with databases and the creation of virtual resources.


In-depth knowledge of literature, history, and archival practices.
