Primary Purpose

The Assistant Curator of Special Collections and Archives/Exhibits Designer (ACSCA/ED) assists the Curator of Special Collections and Archives (CSCA) in the conceptualization and realization of Special Collections mission statement and in formulating Special Collections policies, procedures and administrative supervision.  The ACSCA/ED collaborates with the CSCA to provide access to and to organize, highlight, and preserve the unique, valuable and diverse non-circulating holdings of Middlebury College contained in all five components within Special Collections, including the Abernethy Collection of American Literature, the College Archives, Rare Books and Manuscripts, the Flanders Ballad Collection, and the Vermont Collection.  The ACSCA/ED will plan, research and mount exhibits that highlight holdings in all five collections within Special Collections, advise the CSCA in mounting exhibits, and, when consulted, advise other departments that are organizing displays and exhibits within the Library.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.


Primary Responsibilities:




    In consultation with the CSCA organizes, describes, and classifies selected manuscript collections and Archives records groups and series
    In consultation with the CSCA develops and maintains finding aids, catalogs and inventories to facilitate access to the materials outlined above
    Designs visually interesting and informative exhibits
    Collaborates with the CSCA on content of and designs for exhibit catalogs/brochures and other Special Collection's publications
    Hires, trains, and identifies projects for student workers
    Oversees the records retention program including outreach to academic and administrative departments and staff and student organizations
    Coordinates the College oral history program and supervises its implementation
    Responds to all forms of communication, including walk-ins, regarding reference and research questions from College administration, faculty, students, and staff, independent scholars, and the general public
    Curates the College Archives Photographic Collection
    Oversees the accessioning process
    Provides instruction to staff and researchers on the nature and proper handling of Special Collections materials
    Plans and administers a conservation/preservation program for the diverse types of materials housed in Special Collections, sometimes in cooperation with Preservation and Processing
  • Supervises the daily activities within the Special Collections Reading Room and oversees Special Collections in the CSCA's absence

Works closely with Special Collections staff, student workers, cataloging department, Preservation and Processing, LIS colleagues in mounting exhibits, and representatives of administrative and academic departments, and student and staff organizations.

Education & Training

Graduate degree, preferably an MFA and/or MA in History

Experience

3-5 years of experience in archival work in an academic institution, as many years experience in Fine Arts and graphic design. Working knowledge of digitization standards and practices preferred.
