Primary Purpose |

The Manager of Copy Cataloging serves, along with the other Collections Management workgroup leaders, as part of a collaborative work team responsible for facilitating access to the collections of Library and Information Services. He contributes his individual skills and expertise to help the team achieve its objectives. He is responsible for communicating openly with work group members as well as with other staff affected by the work of Collections Management; facilitates communication among staff under his supervision; raises key questions confronting Collections Management; and engages the team in answering these questions. Additionally, he encourages and participates in a dialogue with the user community in order to understand their expectations, needs, and experiences.
The Manager of Copy Cataloging coordinates and oversees Copy Cataloging (i.e. the use, manipulation, and management of primarily previously-created metadata) within the Library's catalog to provide authority controlled bibliographic access to the Library's collections in all formats, including computer resources accessed remotely via the Internet. Additionally, he has primary responsibility for serials cataloging.

Responsibilities |
Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.
Works as a member of the Collections Management area to facilitate access to the library's collections in all forms, with special attention to newly developing formats Provides support, direction, and feedback to the staff responsible for copy cataloging Coordinates and oversees copy cataloging processes and workflows Conducts final review of cataloging as necessary, especially of difficult copy cataloging Performs copy (and some original) cataloging and item record maintenance of library's serials, including updating holdings records on OCLC Performs database maintenance and maintain authority control system as needed to provide coherence and retrievability of materials Assists library staff and users with questions or problems related to records in the integrated library catalog Assists in hiring, training, and supervising Copy Cataloging work group members and student assistants Develops training programs and materials
- Coordinates and participates in special projects both within Copy Cataloging and across LIS
Key Relationships:
With the LIS Area Director for Collections Management With all Collections Managements work group leaders, especially the work group leader for Original Cataloging (Principle Cataloger) With work group leaders from other LIS areas, as necessary. With the Copy Cataloging work group and others responsible for creation and maintenance of metadata and the library catalog With Serials staff

Education & Training |
Bachelor's degree or equivalent with broad liberal arts knowledge required Reading knowledge of one or more languages taught at Middlebury College required Cataloging and supervisory experience preferred
- Cataloging coursework desired

Experience |
2-4 years of experience in libraries with experience in copy cataloging preferred, including manipulation and manipulation of metadata, knowledge of AACR2, MARC formats, LC subject headings and LC classification Computer skills and facility required
- Familiarity with and understanding of integrated computerized catalog systems

Knowledge |
|
Computer facility and skills required. Reading knowledge of one or more language taught at Middlebury. Familiarity with and understanding of computerized catalog systems. Knowledge of AACR2, MARC formats, LC Subject headings and classification preferred.
