Primary Purpose

Catalogs materials, including authority work, in accordance with national and local standards, policies and procedures, to provide bibliographic access to the library's collection.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

Catalogs (original and copy) other materials in all formats (including electronic resources) and various languages.


Locates, edits and creates authority records.


Performs catalog maintenance, identifying and executing needed changes.


Maintains awareness of current cataloging developments, standards, interpretations and documentation.


With the Catalog Librarian and other staff, develops cataloging policies and procedures.


Revises and oversees cataloging done by other catalog staff, including bibliographic, authority and item records.


Trains catalog staff and student assistants.


Provides reference assistance and instruction in using library resources.


Participates in the collegial and professional responsibilities of a librarian.

Education & Training

Master of Library Science; course work or equivalent experience in cataloging required.

Experience

2 years of experience in cataloging preferred.

Knowledge

Knowledge of cataloging. Reading knowledge of one or more major European languages and ability to catalog in additional languages with the aid of a dictionary.  Knowledge of AACR2, MARC formats, Library of Congress Subject Headings, classification.  Computer skills.  Experience with online catalog systems and cataloging of non-book materials, especially electronic resources, preferred.

Other

Excellent analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills as well as computer facility, logical mind and attention to detail.  Effective verbal and written communication skills.  Self-motivation.
