Primary Purpose

Facilitates use of Starr Library and its collections through supervision of the Circulation and Reserve functions of the Library during evening hours.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Serves library patrons while maintaining library discipline and procedures.


*Carries full responsibility for all facets of library operations and services during certain evening hours.


*Acts as the security officer in case of emergency (fire, medical, power failure, bomb threat).


*Acts to secure the integrity of the collection and the safety of patrons. Monitors security gate and alarm systems in the library.


*Takes primary departmental responsibility for daily supervision and training of student assistants in both the technical aspects of an automated system and the customer service skills necessary to assist patrons.


Utilizes technical knowledge of multiple modules of the automated system (e.g. internet, online databases, library catalog, reference) in assisting patrons.


*Takes responsibility for providing the bulk of customer service; negotiates patron problems, conflicts and special requests.  Refers unresolved questions to Head, Circulation Services.


*Maintains patron database.


*Processes requests for library cards from guest borrowers, thesis students and research assistants.


*Processes materials needed for immediate use in closed Reserves.


*Closes and secures the building each night.  Opens the building in interim sessions.


Utilizes knowledge of equipment maintenance to troubleshoot photocopiers, microfilm/fiche reader/printers, computer labs and printers and moveable shelving.


Maintains records of missing books.  Searches extensively for item when reported missing and for six months after. Keeps monthly statistics on missing items.


Keeps statistics on thesis students and guest borrowers, using Excel and Adobe.


Reviews new acquisitions for errors.


Processes Interlibrary Loan lending and borrowing requests using OCLC, email, ARIEL, fax and other equipment, e.g. copiers, microfilm and scanners.


*Implements recalls and special requests for library materials.


Negotiates conflicts of need.


Substitutes for other Circulation staff when available. 


Undertakes special projects as assigned by the Head, Circulation Services.


Participates in Library staff meetings.

Education & Training

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred.

Experience

2-3 years of previous public service and supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge

Knowledgeable in the policies and procedures associated with libraries as well as in the use of online computer systems.

Other

Keyboard skills.
