Primary Purpose

Supervises student workers, coordinates interlibrary lending activities, provides backup computer software/hardware and equipment troubleshooting support, and provides reference assistance to patrons.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

Hires, schedules, trains, assigns and checks work, evaluates and terminates student workers as necessary.
Coordinates with other staff to provide training and to assign/oversee work of student employees.


Coordinates interlibrary lending activities. Retrieves, copies, transmits, prepares for mailing, and updates records for outgoing ILL materials.


Maintains unit emergency manual.


In the absence of other Senior Armstrong Library Assistant, troubleshoots Library computer hardware/software and other equipment, provides minor repairs and arranges for additional repair work as needed.
Works in consultation with other Senior Armstrong Library Assistant, Starr Library systems staff, ITS, Purchasing Office and other College staff.


In the absence of the Science Library Assistant, negotiates patrons' problems and requests for exceptions, implements recalls, and interprets Myriad.


Provides reference services, answers directional questions and assists patrons within all areas of Library.


Works congenially and collegially with other Library staff, College community and with Library patrons.


Assists Armstrong Library Assistants in their work as necessary.

Education & Training

BA/BS or equivalent experience required. Significant coursework in science, environmental studies, geography or psychology preferred.

Experience

Previous library experience required.

Knowledge

Ability to supervise more than a dozen student workers concurrently and knowledge of College employment policies and procedures as they apply to student workers. Knowledge of College networking environment, Windows environment, basic office, graphics and other academic software applications. Ability to troubleshoot problems, solve minor hardware/software or equipment problems and arrange for external assistance. Knowledge of interlibrary lending and borrowing procedures. Knowledge of College Library policies and procedures and in-depth knowledge of Library online catalog and associated resources. Basic knowledge of science fields (including geography, environmental studies, and psychology) and of the undergraduate educational experience as it applies to information retrieval and use.

Ability to help patrons construct search queries and choose information resources. Effective communication skills and ability to work efficiently/productively in busy environment with competing demands for attention. Ability and willingness to work as a team member in a participative management environment. Flexibility to innovate and adapt to changes in environment, procedures and goals.
