Primary Purpose

The Associate Dean of Library and Information Services (LIS) will work along with the other members of the LIS Administration and management, to provide leadership, direction and oversight for the planning and operations of Library and Information services (LIS) at Middlebury College. The Associate Dean will work closely with the Dean to develop programmatic and organizational initiatives to enhance the technology infrastructure and other services provided by LIS to Middlebury students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other constituencies. He/she will contribute his/her individual skills and expertise as needed in order to achieve the goals and objectives set by the organization.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide support, direction, and oversight in the areas of strategic planning, security and advanced technology initiatives
  • Work as a member of the LIS administrative team to assist with planning and operations, and to provide leadership to specific initiatives
  • In collaboration with other units within LIS, proactively plan for the future, applying knowledge of trends and emerging technologies, with attention to operational implications and potential benefits to Middlebury College
  • Responding to and investigating incidents related to misuse or abuse of Middlebury College information technology resources
  • Develops and maintains positive and collaborative relationships at institutional, divisional and departmental levels, sharing research findings and best practices with key stakeholders
  • Participates in the research, selection, and management of vendor products and relationships to ensure high-quality deliverables for outsourced technology services
  • Provide direct supervision to assigned resources within LIS
  • Work as a member of the LIS administrative team to provide support, direction, and oversight in the area of personnel; including resolution of personnel matters and communication of LIS personnel policies, and development of strategic staffing plan

Education & Training

Masters Degree or an equivalent combination of degree and experience.

Experience

Demonstrated leadership in an academic setting, including work in both information technology and library services.

Knowledge

High degree of knowledge relating to information technology environments, including having a deep understanding and vision for emerging trends in technology, with a focus on our specific administrative and academic needs. Explicit knowledge of systems management, systems engineering, network engineering, network security, network penetration testing and systems administration required.

Other

Excellent technical, communication, analytical and problem-solving skills. Strong and passionate interest in emerging technology with ability to translate these to operational status as appropriate. Must have the ability to work well with people from different academic and administrative disciplines with varying degrees of technical experience and knowledge. Commitment to working in a demanding environment, including work as needed to meet deadlines and project timeframes in response to institutional needs.
