Committed to educating students in the tradition of the liberal arts, Middlebury College is unique among leading liberal arts institutions in that it also offers graduate and specialized programs operating around the world. These programs include the summer Language Schools, the C.V. Starr Middlebury Schools Abroad (30 sites in 12 different countries), the Bread Loaf School of English and the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, as well as the Monterey Institute of International Studies, Middlebury’s affiliate in California. The College is looking for an individual with exceptionally broad vision, an awareness of international educational developments and strong leadership skills to assume the position of Dean of Library and Information Services.
Informed by the College’s educational mission and guided by the goals and objectives established by the College’s strategic plan, the Dean of Library and Information Services sets the strategic direction for Library and Information Services, identifies ways in which LIS services and resources may be applied to support the College’s goals and objectives, establishes college-wide priorities for technology projects and advises senior staff colleagues and department managers regarding deployment of technology resources. As a member of President’s Staff and the Academic Affairs Committee, the DLIS contributes to college-wide policy-setting and strategic planning by bringing to these discussions both functional expertise (as Leader of LIS) as well as a broad perspective regarding the liberal arts and higher education. The Dean coordinates and assists a Board of Trustees Technology Committee and serves as a voting member of the faculty.

Responsibilities |
Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.
- Represents LIS to the college’s academic community (academic year, summer programs, and programs abroad), other service departments, the administration and local community and the wider network of LIS professional organizations nationally and internationally. Fields concerns of different user groups; helps to prioritize competing needs and requests while also articulating LIS staff concerns to the administration and other departments.
- Monitors external environment, assessing risks and benefits of incorporating the use of new technologies within the academic programs and administrative operations.
- Develops organizational models for LIS, determining allocation of human resources based on a broad understanding of the College’s goals and objectives. Sets performance goals that incorporate objectives associated with staff development and training. Develops strategies for recruiting and retaining excellent staff.
- Establishes policies to ensure equity of access to information resources by members of the College community. Establishes local standards regarding the acceptable use of these resources by members of the community, set within the context of local, national and international regulations (e.g., the honor code, copyright and fair use policies).
- Develops resource requirements for LIS. Recommends budget and allocates resources to meet needs of the community. Identifies and seeks new funding sources to support LIS programs and collections, working in collaboration with the Budget and Development offices. Engages in budget planning to incorporate projected future needs for technology and related information resources and services.
- Establishes priorities for addressing library and computing facilities needs. Oversees the maintenance and improvement of library and computing facilities, including large-scale capital projects.
- Oversees LIS network to integrate and support the college’s sites abroad in 12 different countries as well as intensive summer programs both on campus and in satellite locations.
- Oversees ongoing integration of library and information systems with the Monterey Institute of International Studies, Middlebury’s affiliate institution in Monterey, CA.
- Develops strategic plans and sets priorities for LIS. Identifies and integrates new technologies and information services that support and enhance the College’s educational mission and that increase the efficiency and effectiveness of administrative operations.

Education & Training |

Ph.D. preferred. MS in Library/Information Science and/or Computer Science.

Experience |
|
Extensive management and planning experience, including management of both human and financial resources.

In-depth knowledge of scholarly communication, academic library services and information technologies. Broad and thorough knowledge of the academic enterprise.
