Primary Purpose

Assists the Director in the effective operation of the Department of Public Safety.  Under the Director's guidance, DPS will deliver safety and security services which include the development, implementation and administration of programs that assist the campus community in maintaining order and/or improving the personal safety of the students, faculty, staff, guests and property of the college. 

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Oversees the Patrol Operations to include personnel and equipment.


*Responsible for scheduling and approving requests for time off.


*Organizes, develops and supervises the Student Patrol and Midd Rides operations.


*Responsible for Parking Management and Parking Appeals process.


*Responds to emergency calls and investigates incidents as necessary. 


*Supervises and evaluates staff members, recommending appropriate corrective action or commendation.


*In the absence of the Director, acts as the designee in operational matters.


*Assures enforcement of safety regulations, state law and College rules and policies.


*Participates in the development of procedures and participates in conducting staff training.


*Participates on the Safety Committee.


Participates in the integration of Department of Public Safety services into the Commons and the broader campus community.


Assures commitment and compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, College rules, regulations and department policies by all department members.


Makes recommendations for Department of Public Safety facilities, equipment, personnel and operations needs to the Director.


Promotes positive community service and relations with the entire campus community and assures all department members do the same.


Performs budget input for area of department accountable for for administering.


Collaborates with the campus community to problem solve and resolve conflicts.

Education & Training

Post secondary education required.  Equivalent training and experience required.  Specialized and on-the-job training required.

Experience

Previous institutional security background desirable.  Previous administrative and/or supervisory experience.

Knowledge

Knowledge of criminal investigation techniques.

Other

Must be willing to work occasional long shifts.  Must be able to deal with personnel issues and confidential information tactfully and with discretion.  Must pass an extensive background investigation.  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
