Primary Purpose

Oversees the operations of Sciences Technical Support Services department, which provides support to the academic program through mechanical and electronic technical services; equipment installation and maintenance; laboratory support; care of plants, animals and other living organisms; and laboratory stores operations.  Manages Bicentennial Hall facilities to assure appropriate use and optimal functioning in meeting the mission of the College.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Oversees the organizational structure, functioning and operation of the Sciences Technical Support Services department.


*Establishes departmental policies and goals, sets priorities, oversees planning, facilitates staff development and enhancements to services, and ensures the performance of technical and laboratory support functions.


*Develops the budget; oversees implementation of appropriate management systems.


*Supervises Associate Directors and Laboratory Stores Manager to foster teamwork, coordinate among support units and ensure that a high level of customer service is consistently provided.


*Manages operation and use of Bicentennial Hall facilities to assure appropriate, safe and effective functioning and usability.


*Oversees safety and environmental practices in the building, in consultation and coordination with the College's Safety Officer; implements and administers building-wide systems, practices and procedures to meet federal, state and local compliance requirements and standards of good practice in such areas as emergency planning, hazardous waste, controlled substances, radioactive materials and the Chemical Hygiene Plan.


*Serves as Institutional Official to oversee and certify the College's compliance with animal care and use regulations; oversees IACUC and the Attending Veterinarian; develops, negotiates and implements related registrations and assurances with governmental agencies.


*Serves as institutional official and as Radiation Safety Officer with responsibility to oversee compliance with the College's Radioactive Materials License; develops, negotiates and implements license amendments with the NRC to meet changing program needs.


*Serves as "public face" of Bicentennial Hall to the College and larger communities, organizing building tours, open houses, site visits and other public relations activities.


*Works closely with Bicentennial Hall users to assess needs; coordinates with other College departments to ensure that appropriate services are provided and that requests related to Bicentennial Hall operations are generated, communicated and tracked properly; resolves problems and complaints between building users and service providers.


*Coordinates management of shared spaces, including public spaces, classrooms, generic labs and lecture hall demo areas.


*Develops and implements policies regarding use of Great Hall and other public spaces for conferences, events, exhibits and displays.


*Reviews facility operations, preparing reports, developing proposals and coordinating improvements with various College departments; ensures that necessary data, records and other documentation are properly managed and maintained.

Education & Training

Bachelor's degree in science or related area, or equivalent experience.  Master's degree preferred.  Specific training in management and supervisory skills (may be taken after employment).

Experience

Minimum of 5 years of experience in an academic or research lab environment, with progressively-increasing supervisory and management responsibility.  Experience in use and handling of radioactive materials.

Knowledge

Must have an effective working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.  Knowledge of the general principles regarding building equipment and systems, typical laboratory processes and needs, and building trades.

Other

Strong interpersonal skills.  Ability to work under pressure, meet multiple deadlines and juggle varied priorities.  Must be willing and able to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students.
