Primary Purpose |

Responsible for weekend/vacation/holiday care and maintenance of vertebrate animals; currently mainly rats and mice, but may include rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, birds, amphibians, snakes and others. Assists with plant and other organismal care and stockroom coverage, as needed.

Responsibilities |
Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.
Checks, cleans and refills feeders and water bottles as necessary. Changes bedding and washes animal cages as needed. Visually checks animals for well-being. Monitors and records room temperature readings daily, and checks for proper ventilation of colony rooms. Checks on equipment used in experimental procedures, such as light timers and activity monitors, and confirms proper operation. Identifies problems, and for each, logs the event and determines urgency; in the event of an urgent problem, calls Facilities Management, the Animal Facility Manager, the affected faculty researcher or other designated personnel. Sweeps floors in animal rooms, corridors and cage-cleaning area; empties trash cans. Assists in coverage of the Bicentennial Hall stockroom and greenhouse facility as necessary and as scheduled, in support of other TSS staff.

Education & Training |

Some high school required; diploma or GED preferred. Prior on-the-job training in animal care, husbandry, or farming an asset.

Experience |
|
Previous experience with small animals helpful but not required.

|
Affinity for animals, respect for their welfare essential. Must be responsible and dependable. Should not have any allergies to animals that prevent performance of duties listed above.
